After seemingly rediscovering his TikTok password this week after a lengthy absence, Morgan Wallen has shared an amusing clip of him poking fun at his viral piano-flipping video.
In the background of the video, which was recorded backstage at Wallen's recent show in Denver, to some fans’ surprise, you can hear Avicii's iconic House hit, ’The Night’.
Although this might come as a strange song-choice for his pre-show hang, Wallen's love of the genre is no secret. One of his earliest hits, after all, was the EDM-infused Diplo collaboration, ‘Heartless’, a song that is a much-loved mainstay in his setlist. When Morgan Wallen idly discussed his love of House on Theo Von's podcast last year, revealing his ambition to one day release a project in the genre under a new artist-name, most traditionalist country fans baulked at the idea.
Wallen already catches flak from the old-school crowd for how he incorporates Hip Hop elements into his sound, so to introduce the notion of dropping a full House record? Preposterous!
Wallen explained that he'd been having conversations with his team about releasing a more lyrics-driven House side-project under a new name, “It might be House music...It wouldn't even be similar to the type of music that I'm doing...it would be nothing even close to what I'm doing now. It would be like...I mean, I like House music a little bit. I listen to it when I'm working out or driving...like melodic stuff...But I feel like a lot of that stuff doesn't necessarily have a lot of words, so maybe like, what if I take a song of mine that didn't make my album, but it's got a story, it's got all these things, would people like that? I don't know”.
And perhaps this isn't as outlandish an idea as it initially seemed. In fact, given the current explosion in YeeDM - the name playfully given to country-EDM crossovers - it feels like it might just be the perfect time for Wallen to delve into the genre.
Kane Brown spoke to Logan Paul last summer about how he's trying to “rebrand” away from country, and that Wallen was keen to do the same. Lately, Brown has been openly toying with the prospect of sharing a full-blown EDM and House project.
Brown, like Wallen, has a strong track record in the space, linking up with Marshmello for ‘One Thing Right’ and ‘Miles On It’, as well as dropping the floor-filling ‘Next to You’.
It's clear that Brown and Wallen aren't the only two artists aware of the untapped potential of YeeDM. In the past few weeks alone, for instance, we've seen EDM juggernaut Kygo recruiting bluegrass veteran Dan Tyminski - and the vocalist from Avicii's ‘Hey Brother’ - for the sleek, ‘Heaven On Your Mind’. This followed his surprise link-up with Carter Faith - one of the most buzzed-about country artists in the modern Music City landscape - for the euphoric ‘That's When You Know’.
Last week, Diplo - a prolific YeeDM dabbler under his Thomas Wesley alter-ego - extended his run of country crossovers with two collaborations with Cameron Whitcomb and Wyatt Flores.
Similarly, Marshmello has been on a hot streak of country-House tracks, releasing ‘Holy Water’ with Jelly Roll, ‘Where We Go’ with Thomas Rhett, ‘Better Man Than Me’ with Hudson Westbrook and more seemingly up the elusive DJ's sleeve.
And it's these collaborations with country's next generation - the likes of Whitcomb, Flores, Faith and Westbrook - that are signalling the imminent direction of YeeDM.
Of course, there will always be the slightly cheesier, more radio-friendly country-EDM collaborations between big-name artists. But we suspect that, if Wallen and Brown are going to attempt to move into the EDM space, this slightly edgier, more alternative and decidedly cooler sound is the vibe they'll be opting for.
Despite the slightly commercial rep country-EDM tracks currently get, this alt-leaning sound that Diplo and Kygo have experimented with provides a great blueprint for how artists can craft these House-inspired offerings without losing their credibility.
At the end of the day, of course, we need only look to the pioneer of this sub-genre, the late great Avicii, who cut the lights on that fateful day at Ultra Miami 2023 and debuted ‘Wake Me Up’ with Aloe Blacc and a live band, only to be greeted by a chorus of boos from a beat-hungry audience. Now, Avicii's blurring of country, folk and EDM has paved the way for more open-minded DJ's, like Kygo and Diplo.
While we're not sure what exactly Wallen is plotting for his next move - and we're still waiting on that long-tease full version of ‘Interlude’ - the timing feels perfect for a House foray.
EDM is enjoying a massive surge in popularity, not too dissimilar to the one country experienced at the start of the 2020's, and that it is still benefiting from. Last year, for instance, a study found that the electronic music industry grew to $12.9 billion globally in 2025, up 6% year-over-year. The year before that, TikTok videos using the hashtag #ElectronicMusic raked in 13 million views - a 45% increase year-on-year. And this is being reflected in the live market, too, with electronic artists making up 18% of line-ups across the world's top 100 festivals, continuing a steady increase we've been witnessing since around 2021.
Through younger, internationally resonant DJs such as Fred Again... and Fisher, new pockets and textures of the genre are opening up. After the heavy, Zach Bryan-esque introspection of the early 2020s, country fans are ready to dance again. Florida Georgia Line are seemingly reforming, and many listeners are longing for a party-ready, Bro-Country-esque sound. But perhaps a return to Bro-Country isn't how we satisfy this clubber's impulse - maybe it's through a new brand of YeeDM.
With new country-EDM collaborations popping up almost every week, and two of the biggest artists in the genre, Wallen and Brown, admitting their love of House, the signs are pointing to YeeDM being the next major movement to emerge within country.
