With rumours flying around Drake's foray into country music, after the self-proclaimed 6 God teased a remix of Ella Langley's ‘Choosin’ Texas’ this weekend, you can't help but feel Morgan Wallen's old Drake covers were a sign of what was to come.
Wallen, of course, was Drake's first major step into the country music world, with Drizzy recruiting the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper for an unexpected cameo in his ‘You Broke My Heart’ music video back in 2023. Then, last summer, Drake joined Wallen for his Houston pre-show walk-out, before donning a custom Wallen jersey during his Berlin tour-stop a few weeks later. This fuelled rumours around a collaboration, perhaps even an extended version of Wallen's I'm the Problem ‘Interlude’, which is yet to materialise. Although there's been no official collaboration just yet, Drake name-checked Wallen on ‘White Bone’ from his 2026 album, HABIBTI.
Now, Drake seems to be hinting at a blockbuster, trap-infused remix of Langley's record-breaking hit single, ‘Choosin’ Texas’, with the Toronto rapper playing a clip of the song during a hometown club set. It comes after he was spotted gleefully singing along to the Hot 100 No. 1 at Langley's show in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
With Drake also gearing up for another new album, Fear Of Missing Out - despite having just released three full-length records, ICEMAN, HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR - many fans are assuming his ‘Choosin’ Texas’ remix will feature on FOMO.
As the excitement continues to intensify around Drake's long-awaited venture into the country music landscape, after years of subtle lyrical name-checks for the likes of George Strait and Shania Twain and country-themed fashion choices, we're feeling a little nostalgic about Wallen's early covers of the ‘Know Yourself’ rapper.
Wallen has always been open about how much he loves The Boy's catalogue, citing Drake as a crucial influence on his own songwriting via SiriusXM's Morgan Wallen Radio.
The Sneedville crooner shared a couple of largely under-rated covers of Drake's ‘Chicago Freestyle’ and ‘Shot for Me’ while he was still finding his footing as an artist.
Wallen's acoustic rendition of ‘Shot for Me’ came back in 2016, before he'd released his debut album, If I Know Me. This not only foreshadowed his eventual friendship with Drake, but also the fact that Wallen would ultimately become synonymous with his penchant for blurring the lines between country, trap and Hip-Hop.
Similarly, his slightly more recent take on ‘Chicago Freestyle’, which appeared on Drake's 2020 Dark Lane Demo Tapes project, feels like a tentative showcase of just how versatile Wallen's artistry would become. In this clip, he sings Giveon's hazy, introspective hook from ‘Chicago Freestyle’, highlighting that - should Drake ever call on the country titan for a feature - he'd undoubtedly be able to hold his own.
It feels like Langley, rather than Wallen, has become Drake's latest entry-point into the country arena, with his ‘Choosin’ Texas’ remix release date seemingly on the horizon.
But we're feeling confident that, given their longstanding relationship and high-profile history of link-ups, if Drake is indeed planning to give FOMO a country twist, Wallen has to be involved. We're still hoping that it's the longer version of ’Interlude’, which was taken from a full song called ‘Wrong Way’, with Wallen's I'm the Problem track capturing the moody, R&B-infused ambience that Drake usually opts for.
Either way, with Drake's country love-affair seemingly coming to a head this Fall, Wallen's ‘Shot for Me’ and ‘Chicago Freestyle’ covers take on a whole new sheen of significance. They feel like clues as to how the once-strict boundaries between country and Hip-Hop would crumble - largely thanks to Wallen - and how, in no small part because of Wallen's experimentation, Drake would feel as though he could feasibly enter country music and it wouldn't be viewed as a crazy, left-field concept. We're keeping our fingers crossed that Drake has collaborations with Langley, Wallen and many more country artists in the vault as to readies FOMO.
