With videos of Drake's unexpected cameo at Ella Langley's Arkansas show over the weekend spreading across social media, the surprise link-up has left fans wondering whether there could be a blockbuster, genre-blurring collaboration on the cards.

Fans of country and rap will know all too well that we've been here before, with Drake and Morgan Wallen hinting at a joint song for the best part of three years now, with Drake then dashing our hopes when he dropped his trio of new albums without a Wallen feature in sight. There was, though, a name-check on ’White Bone’, which means there's still a glimmer of hope that we might one day get this collaboration.

Now, though, fans’ attention has turned towards a different country-trap crossover, with Drake attending Langley's North Little Rock show this past weekend. When Langley performed her hit single, ’Choosin’ Texas’, clips of Drake gleefully singing along flashed up on the big screen, prompting cheers from the crowd.

It came a matter of days after Drake responded to Langley's recent Instagram post by praising her songwriting, with the self-proclaimed ‘6 God’ gushing, ‘Goated pen’.

There have been numerous clips circulating online in recent months of Drake playing ’Choosin’ Texas’ during his frequent Houston DJ sets, a move that many saw as a major co-sign, especially given how Langley blocked Drake from claiming the entire Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in May when he dropped his three albums.

Now, as we all know, Drake is one of the most strategic and cunning artists in modern music when it comes to album rollouts, as we saw with his genius ice-block stunt in Toronto back in May, with the release date for ICEMAN being revealed as it melted.

Knowing this many, fans aren't convinced that his Langley pop-up was simply an artist showing love to another artist, especially given it was a seemingly random location. It wasn't in Texas, where Drake has a ranch, nor was it in his hometown of Toronto.

What's more, on the big screen Drake could be seen chilling with ERNEST, who was opening for Langley. ERNEST is a Nashville lynchpin when it comes to facilitating country-trap collaborations, with ERN starting out as a rapper and then establishing himself as one of the most prolific and versatile songwriters in Music City.

It's worth flagging that ERN is also, of course, one of Wallen's closest friends, and he was reportedly part of the crew that flew out for Wallen's cameo in Drake's ‘You Broke My Heart’ music video, so this won't be the first time he's met the rap phenom.

With ERN writing a lot with Langley as well as Wallen, we'd be surprised if the subject of collaborating didn't at least come up in conversation while they all hung out in Arkansas.

What's more, despite Drake having just gifted us three albums - ICEMAN, HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR - he's already been teasing what appears to be his next project, FEAR OF MISSING OUT. He shared an image of a briefcase with the title emblazoned across it, and eagle-eyed fans noticed that it was resting on the same table on which he first shared the names of his three previous albums.

Adding to the intrigue is the fact that the president of Drake's OVO Sound label, Mr. Morgan, used the phrase “summers ours, winter too” in relation to Drizzy's triple-album release via Instagram. This has many fans thinking that Drake is dropping a new project - perhaps the first since reportedly leaving Universal - later this year. Or perhaps it's a more concise EP in the style of his Scary Hours series.

With Drake having a longstanding connection to country music through cameos and lyrical references to the likes of George Strait and Shania Twain, as well as being an artist that famously loves to dip his toes into other genres, such as dancehall and Afrobeats, we've been waiting for him to venture into country music for years.

Now, with Drake's latest link-up with Langley and the praise online - as well as the lingering rumours surrounding him and Wallen - we're hoping he's recruited Langley for a momentous joint song on his mysterious new project, FEAR OF MISSING OUT.
