As well as delivering an eagerly awaited performance of his hit song, ‘Human’, Cody Johnson will take the 2023 CMT Awards stage this Sunday alongside a star-studded rock cast.
The man warmly known as ‘CoJo’ is hoping to walk away from the ceremony with the coveted 2023 CMT Video of the Year accolade.
Johnson will be performing with Barry Gibbons, Chuck Leavell, Paul Rodgers, Slash and Warren Haynes in a special tribute to the iconic rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
As well as celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Lynyrd Skynyrd's self-titled debut album, the 2023 CMT Awards set will also honour Gary Rossington, one of the founding members of the chart-topping group. Rossington sadly passed away in early March.
In addition, country stars LeAnn Rimes and Wynonna Judd will join the tribute to fill in for The Honkettes, who produced the distinctive backing vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Texas’ Cody Johnson will lead the vocals with Paul Rodgers, while Billy Gibbons, Slash and Warren Haynes will take over the electric guitar duties.
The set is due to include an array of classic Lynyrd Skynyrd hits, with viewers no doubt looking forward to hearing their iconic Southern rock anthem, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’.
Heartwarmingly, Lynyrd Skynyrd band-members, Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlock and Dale Krantz Rossington - who was also Gary Rossington's wife - will all be in attendance at the 2023 CMT Awards, and will get to see the inspiring tribute in-person.
It's set to be a stellar occasion, with a plethora of show-stopping performances in store from Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, Kelsea Ballerini, Megan Moroney, Kane & Katelyn Brown, Carly Pearce & Gwen Stefani and more.
