When country singer-songwriter HARDY announced his foray into rock music via his 2023 album, the mockingbird & THE CROW, some suspected it would lead to the Mississippi songsmith spreading himself too thinly across both genres.
This week, he's once again proving his doubters wrong, with one of the lead singles from the rock half of the album, ‘JACK’, having now become HARDY's first ever No. 1 at US Rock Radio.
The high-octane anthem finds HARDY singing as the personification of Jack Daniels whiskey, as he nefariously whispers advice into the listener's ears, before launching into the ferocious, part-screamed hook (“Don't listen to momma / Hell, I ain't the devil / Ditch me when you wanna / But if you need a little / I can fix your problems”).
It's a cleverly composed track that once again showcases the songwriting dexterity that has led to a plethora of hit country songs emanating from HARDY's pen over the years, including Blake Shelton's ‘God's Country’ and Florida Georgia Line's ‘Simple’.
As he notches up his first No. 1 single at US Rock Radio, HARDY also seems to be en route to a Country Radio No. 1 in the coming weeks. His hugely popular collaboration with Lainey Wilson, ‘wait in the truck’, recently leapt up to the second spot on the Mediabase Country chart.
The song's momentum continues to build as a result of both HARDY and Lainey Wilson regularly performing the ballad live as part of their 2023 tour setlists.
HARDY is currently supporting his good buddy, Morgan Wallen, on his One Night At A Time world tour, while Lainey Wilson is juggling her own headlining Country With A Flare run of dates with her role as an opener on Luke Combs’ 2023 world tour.
HARDY is also preparing for what looks set to be a successful 2023 ACM Awards ceremony in May, with the country-rock maverick having earned more nominations than any other artist with seven.
