Hudson Westbrook is opening up about how he got his start in music, with the ‘Painted You Pretty’ singer-songwriter recalling his mother's heartwarming encouragement early on.
With Westbrook releasing his keenly anticipated sophomore studio album, Made You Look, today (Friday, November 6th), it's touching to look back at how the Texas prodigy made the leap and recorded his first ever hit single, ‘Two Way Drive’.
While chatting to RFD TV about his country music origin story, Westbrook smiles as he recalls his mother reminding him of how he started, “She's like, ‘I'm still the one that gave you $400 and a heart-rock and told you to go record your first song’”.
The ‘Permanent’ crooner fondly goes on, “That's how it all started. She gave me $400 and left the heart-rock in my truck, and said, ‘Go record ‘Two Way Drive’. And it's crazy to even think that I recorded a song for $400 at this point. But yeah, it's cool”.
Making this all the more impressive is the fact that ‘Two Way Drive’ ended up becoming Westbrook's first big hit, with the infectious song reaching No. 1 on Texas Radio in 2024.
Now, Westbrook has a national Country Radio No. 1 to his name with ’House Again’, with his latest album, Made You Look, one of the biggest country releases of the month.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Westbrook shed some more light on how his mother, Heidi, has always been supportive of his musical aspirations - even if she was a little upset that he hadn't told her he'd dropped out of college.
Westbrook reflected on revealing the news to the crowd and his unsuspecting mother while on-stage at Austin City Limits in October 2024. Afterwards, he light-heartedly remembers, she was not best pleased at first, “She said, ‘Well, I'm not paying for your bills anymore, you're not getting this, and not paying for your insurance’”.
He underlines that, ultimately, his mother wanted him to follow his heart and pursue music, “She was like, ‘But, I want you to chase your dreams’. And she said, ‘You can always go back to college, you can't always chase a music career. Like, it's hot while you got it, you got the writing while you have it. You're young. Chase it’”.
With Westbrook's Made You Look serving as the latest in a string of stellar, celebrated releases from the ‘Hits Me’ hitmaker, we're sure his mother is incredible proud of her son. The duo even got to walk the 2025 CMA Awards Red Carpet together, and perhaps he'll get to treat her to a similar experience at the 2026 ceremony later this month, as another heartfelt thank-you for always believing in him.
