The Background:
Arriving as part of Hudson Westbrook's eagerly anticipated 2026 studio album, Made You Look, ‘Permanent’ finds the Texas native professing his undying love for his partner.
It's a heartfelt ode that showcases the ‘Painted You Pretty’ singer-songwriter's ability to pen a sincere, touching love-song that doesn't stray into saccharine or twee territory.
The Sound:
‘Permanent’ is an intimate and in some ways quite vulnerable offering, so it makes sense that this is reflected in the stripped-back, pared-down composition. Westbrook's honeyed vocals meander across the warm, cushioning guitar riff and undulating drums, creating a romantic ambience as he serenades his lover.
The Meaning:
Westbrook begins by listing some things that are going to stay with him forever, such as his tattoo of Texas on his right wrist and the dents in his beloved old truck.
He goes on to say that, much like these various scars and marks, his love for his partner will never disappear (“My love for you is lefthand true, no, it ain't going nowhere, we / Got it written in the stars, heart to heart, no, it ain't temporary / When it comes to my fire, you're burnin' it / And when it comes to my world, you're turnin' it / And I ain't sayin' I'm deservin' it, but I'm sure of it / Yeah, we're permanent”).
As the song approaches its moving crescendo, Westbrook hints that he has plans to make their love a little more permanent in another sense, by asking for her hand in marriage (“Permanent like an I do / Permanent like a name on a dotted line”).

-
Some things don't never go away, babe
They're here to stay
-
My love for you is lefthand true, no, it ain't going nowhere, we
Got it written in the stars, heart to heart, no, it ain't temporary
When it comes to my fire, you're burnin' it
And when it comes to my world, you're turnin' it
And I ain't sayin' I'm deservin' it, but I'm sure of it
Yeah, we're permanent
-
We're the hearts that we carved in an oak tree
We're a never gonna forget memory
We're the names that we painted on the overpass
We're gonna last
-
My love for you is lefthand true, no, it ain't going nowhere, we
Got it written in the stars, heart to heart, no, it ain't temporary
When it comes to my fire, you're burnin' it
And when it comes to my world, you're turnin' it
And I ain't sayin' I'm deservin' it, but I'm sure of it
Yeah, we're permanent
-
Permanent like an I do
Permanent like a name on a dotted line
No, it ain't just perfect
It's, yeah, it's
-
My love for you is lefthand true, no, it ain't going nowhere
Got it written in the stars, heart to heart, nah, it ain't temporary
When it comes to my fire, you're burnin' it
And when it comes to my world, you're turnin' it
And I ain't sayin' I'm deservin' it, but I'm sure of it
Yeah, we're permanent
Yeah, we're permanent”
