The Background:
During Drake's eagerly anticipated Fear Of Missing Out short film on Tuesday, September 15th 2026, the Toronto rapper debuted the full version of his ‘Choosin’ Texas’ remix.
A reimagined rendition of Ella Langley's record-breaking hit, ‘Solar Eclipse’ features a guest verse from Don Toliver, marking the long-awaited first link-up between the duo.
The full song was made available on streaming platforms a few weeks later on Drake's HABIBTI (FOMO), alongside ‘Quebec’, ‘Classic PT2’ and another Don Toliver collaboration, ‘Cold Shoulder’. ‘Cold Shoulder’ also features some haunting vocals from Yebba.
Drake first teased his ‘Choosin’ Texas’ remix during a club set in Houston at the end of August, which came shortly after the ‘God's Plan’ hitmaker was spotted singing along to Langley's set in North Little Rock, Arkansas on her 2026 Dandelion Tour.
A couple of months prior, Drake showed love to Langley's songwriting, commenting “Goated pen” under one of her Instagram posts. It serves as the latest in a string of country-crossover moments from Drake, but the first official country-inspired song (not counting his country-leaning ‘Rusty Intro’ from 2026's HABIBTI).
Then, Drake and Don Toliver treated us to the full remix during the FOMO stream, with the track playing over shots of Drake backstage at Langley's show and then on-stage with Toliver in Toronto a few weeks later. The full version finally arrived on Friday, October 2nd 2026, as part of the FOMO edition of Drake's HABIBTI album. If you're watching Drake's FOMO short-film, ‘Solar Eclipse’ appears at 40:38.
The Sound:
While Drake has showcased his love for country music throughout his career, name-checking greats like George Strait and Shania Twain and linking up with artists like Morgan Wallen and ERNEST, he stays true to his signature rap sound on ‘Solar Eclipse’.
The song finds Drake crooning forlornly across a hazy, R&B instrumental and a meandering, muted drum pattern. He laces his vocals with his trademark, syrupy Auto-Tune modulation, helping to give the song a slightly electronic, moody ambience.
Don Toliver's verse features the ‘E85’ crooner's similarly Auto-Tuned, atmospheric vocals, which complement Drake's seamlessly. Given how well the two artists’ styles blend together, it's hard to believe we've had to wait this long for a collaboration.
‘Solar Eclipse’ interpolates the 2005 Houston rap track, ‘Get Throwed’, by Bun B, JAŸ-Z, Pimp C, Z-Ro and Jeezy - just in case you were wondering why Drake's longstanding nemesis and rival, JAŸ-Z, is credited as a co-writer on this song.
The Meaning:
Drake maintains the melancholic spirit of Langley's ‘Choosin‘ Texas’, but flips the hook to give it a more sensual vibe. He swaps out the lyric, “Drinking Jack all by myself” for “Drinking Yak all by myself”, with ‘Yak’ being a common abbreviation of ‘Cognac’.
Rather than singing about a cowboy riding off into the sunset, Drake instead paints a picture of a sexual encounter with a cowgirl, using the original “riding” imagery as a euphemism, while still conveying the idea that she will eventually ride off into the sunset.
In the first verse, Drake name-checks one of his good buddies and NFL star, Johnny Manziel, declaring that he's throws out ‘hits’ like Manziel throws game-winning passes. Manziel played for Texas A&M at the start of his career, making his appearance here feel apt. Drake references the home of Texas A&M, College Station.
He goes on to show off his knowledge of Texas, with Drake owning a ranch near Houston, with the rapper name-checking River Oaks, Sugarland, Pearlland and Woodlands.
There's a playful callback to his song with PARTYNEXTDOOR, ‘Spider-Man Superman’, from their joint $ome $exy $ongs 4 U album, when he sings, “Batman, Spider-Man, Superman / They can't save y'all like I want to”. Drake goes on to question why his lover keeps overlooking him, suggesting that there's no other man she should be with, before admitting he doesn't feel like they're on the same page.
For Toliver's verse, he references his latest album, OCTANE, before describing a hedonistic scene where everyone is smoking joints and getting well acquainted with each other.

“Yeah, ayy
She's from Texas, I can tell by the way she grip on my wood grain
She's down to take a hundred shots with me and talk about my pain
It doesn't take a crystal ball to see
A cowgirl ends up riding off on me
Drinkin' Yak all by myself
She's from Texas, I can tell, baby
-
Big wooden wheel, where should I go?
Johnny Manziel with hits that I throw
College Station nights you used to know
Now you're getting fried down in River Oaks, I already know
Sugar Land, Pearland, Woodlands, you just need a good man, oh
Yeah
Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, they can't save you like I want to
No
Salesman, businessman, postman, they can't write it like the notebook
You still can't name me one man that I should get overlooked for, what?
Yeah
It's a solar eclipse tomorrow and your period hit in the morning
I hand you a joint when I rolled it, this the summer you say you quit smokin'
And you ask me 'bout cashin' a check, and you ask me what's in my account
And I don't even know what that is, 'cause I don't even check
'Cause I don't even check
-
(Big wooden wheel, where should I go?)
Fort Bend, Texas, Katy, Texas, bae, I can't make this up (That it's you, babe)
Sippin' Yak all by myself (That it's you, babe)
She's from Texas, I can tell (That it's you, babe, yeah)
-
Lead me to OCTANE, yeah
It's all on the house, it's all on your blouse
It's all over your mouth right now
Donny ain't here for now
Pre-rolls in my house, it's guns in my couch
Don't touch unless you wanna find out
-
Fort Bend, Texas, Katy, Texas, bae, I can't make this up (That it's you, babe)
Sippin' Yak all by myself (That it's you, babe)
She's from Texas, I can tell (That it's you, babe, yeah)”
