As the hype continues to build ahead of Drake's remix of Ella Langley's ‘Choosin’ Texas’, fans are excitedly speculating as to whether this might be the Toronto rapper's first foray into country music. But we're arguing that Drake already treated us to his first country song earlier in the year as part of his HABIBTI studio album.
The first track on that project - which serves as the more melodic, R&B-infused of his three May 2026 albums, compared to the rap-driven ICEMAN and the experimental, dancehall-leaning MAID OF HONOUR - is a pared-down ode called ‘Rusty Intro’.
When it first dropped, some fans immediately started commenting on how it sounded like a country song, with Drake crooning wistfully across a stripped-back acoustic guitar. While an acoustic guitar doesn't automatically render a song country, there's enough twang injected into the guitar mix to give this a decidedly country feel.
You could argue that Drizzy's signature, Auto-Tune laced vocals and the gradual introduction of a jarring, staccato drum pattern shifts the song away from country.
But let's be honest, when the time came for Drake to explore country, he was always going to put his own spin on the genre, rather than diving headfirst into a sea of steel and banjos.
Now, given how he's been teasing the ‘Choosin‘ Texas’ remix in recent weeks and one of his close affiliates, DJ Akademiks, hinted that his mysterious Fear Of Missing Out project could be a country record, Drake's ‘Rusty Intro’ takes on a whole new meaning.
It feels like a clue about Drake's new direction. While we're not convinced Fear Of Missing Out will be entirely country, we're confident his ‘Choosin’ Texas’ remix will appear on it.
As we've highlighted in the past, despite cementing himself as one of the all-time rap greats, Drake has always had an affinity for country music, name-checking legends of the genre in his music - like George Strait and Shania Twain - while striking up a friendship with one of the biggest country artists on the planet, Morgan Wallen.
Drake recruited Wallen for his 2023 ‘You Broke My Heart’ music video, before popping out at his Houston concert last year for his pre-show walk-out. Later in 2025, the self-proclaimed ‘6 God’ donned a Wallen x Big Loud jersey while performing in Berlin. Drake went on to name-check Wallen on another HABIBTI song, ‘White Bone’.
Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but there's no question that all the signs are pointing towards Drake venturing further into the country music space. With Fear Of Missing Out seemingly the next piece of the puzzle, and Drake delivering an enigmatic FOMO live-stream on YouTube on September 15th, we suspect we'll have a clearer idea of what the ‘God's Plan’ hitmaker has up his sleeve for us very soon...
