Tyler Childers - Rustin' In the Rain: 2023 Release Date and Tracklist

Tyler Childers has officially entered a brand new musical era.

Excitingly, the Kentucky native has now released his sixth studio album, 'Rustin' In The Rain', on September 8th. The first single taken from the album, ‘In You Love’, was released on Thursday, July 27 at 8am ET.

Tthe tracklist for the Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven? follow-up was confirmed via Spotify's Indigo playlist, which showed viewers a video clip with the tracklist text overlayed.

Rustin’ in the Rain features Tyler's long-awaited cover of S.G. Goodman's ‘Space and Time’, along with the fan-favourite ‘Percheron Mules’, which he's performed a number of times in the past.

Also featuring on the compact but acclaimed Rustin’ in the Rain is ‘Luke 2:8-10’, ‘Phone Calls and Emails’ and the uptempo, joyous title-track. Completing the project is a cover of Kris Kristofferson's iconic 1970 ballad, ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’.

Following numerous teasers, vocal anticipation from fans and the announcement of two massive New Years shows at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on July 26th, Childers finally announced the album at the same time as the release of the first single.

During his headlining set at Bonnaroo 2023, Tyler Childers teased an unreleased track that was tentatively entitled ‘I'll Wait For You’. Fans began speculating that the track had been renamed and repackaged as ‘In Your Love’, and with the release of the new single on Thursday, July 27, this was confirmed.

The sweet, reflective lead single features a serene combination of wistful keys and a weighty guitar, while Tyler's distinctive vocals glide powerfully across the instrumental.

Tyler's previous record, Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven?, was a sprawling, sonically diverse triple-album, which featured three distinct, boundary-pushing renditions of each song.

Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven? pivoted soul-stirringly around spirituality and faith, and was celebrated by many - including Holler - as one of the 2022 albums of the year. Tyler revisits religion on the new album, most viscerally through ‘Luke 2:8-10’, which features Margo Price voicing the angel delivering the news of Jesus’ birth.

With this new record, Tyler Childers has returned to the more country-leaning sound of his earlier projects, such as Country Squire and Purgatory, as highlighted on the likes of ‘Percheron Mules’, ‘Space and Time’ and ‘Phone Calls and Emails’.

Speaking in the lead-up to the release of Rustin’ in the Rain, Tyler underlined that Elvis Presley's music served as a colossal influence on the creation of the new album.

He explained to The New York Times, “I don’t know if it was me saying that, or the algorithm thought I was the guy to send it to, but all of the sudden there was all of this Elvis stuff around me. So I played it like a Nashville songwriter, trying to come up with songs to pitch”.
