The Story Behind Kenny Chesney's ‘Silver Sands Marina’
Silver Sands Marina arrives at an interesting point in Kenny Chesney's career.
His 21st studio album follows 2024's Born, but also marks the beginning of a new chapter as his first album released through his independent HEY NOW Records.
That independence gave Chesney an opportunity to approach the record differently, but there was no sudden reinvention or carefully mapped-out concept. The songs that eventually became Silver Sands Marina had been accumulating over several years, with Chesney writing, listening to and considering hundreds of songs along the way.
There was continuity behind the scenes too. Chesney once again worked with longtime co-producer Buddy Cannon, maintaining one of the creative partnerships that has helped shape his music for decades while changing the structure surrounding how that music would be released.
The first glimpse of this new era arrived in May 2026 with ‘Carry On’, which became Chesney's first single for HEY NOW Records. By that point, however, the album itself was still evolving.
Chesney has admitted there was “no master plan” for Silver Sands Marina. Even when he thought the record was largely finished, finding the eventual title track helped change its shape. Chesney and Cannon returned to the studio, cut three more songs and continued working on the sequence until the final 11 tracks began to feel like they belonged together.
That slightly unconventional process goes some way to explaining the variety across Silver Sands Marina. Rather than being built around one particular sound or theme, the album moves through vintage country, rock, Calypso, '90s country and quieter introspective moments, pulling together several of the musical worlds Chesney has inhabited throughout his career.
It was only when Chesney sat down and listened to the final sequence that he realised what those different songs had become.
“This is an album,” he remembers thinking.
For an artist whose career began when albums were still at the centre of country music, that distinction mattered. Chesney has spoken about Silver Sands Marina taking him back to “when albums mattered”, with songs that work individually but also begin to speak to one another when heard together.
Rather than trying to define a new version of Kenny Chesney, Silver Sands Marina seems to have emerged from giving himself the freedom to explore all the different versions already there. More than 30 years into his recording career, it's an album shaped less by a predetermined destination than by following the songs until they showed him where they wanted to go.

Who Features on Kenny Chesney's Silver Sands Marina?
Kenny Chesney is joined by three featured artists across Silver Sands Marina: Megan Moroney on ‘It Just Got Weird’, Lily Meola on ‘Goldfish’ and Colbie Caillat on ‘What We Got Going On’. Rather than simply bringing in big-name guests, Chesney has explained that he wanted to sing with artists who could heighten the particular emotion already running through each song.
Megan Moroney - ‘It Just Got Weird’
Megan Moroney's appearance continues a friendship that has grown considerably since she joined Chesney on his 2024 Sun Goes Down Tour. The pair subsequently collaborated on 2025's CMA-nominated ‘You Had To Be There’, but Chesney sees something very different in what Moroney brings to ‘It Just Got Weird’.
Chesney has called Moroney “the buddy I never saw coming”, praising how hungry she is, her commitment to songs and her willingness to embrace both the mistakes and heartache that come with living. Moroney was particularly keen to appear on ‘It Just Got Weird’, with Chesney joking that she “damn near insisted” on singing it. Once she did, he felt her voice was perfect for the song's mixture of emotion and angst.
More recently, Chesney has described the richness in Moroney's performance, saying she can sound strong, “sassy and fun” while simultaneously allowing vulnerability into her vocal. “I'm very proud to have her on there,” he said of her appearance.
Lily Meola - ‘Goldfish’
Lily Meola joins Chesney on the playful ‘Goldfish’, a light-hearted heartbreak song built around its narrator wishing he possessed a goldfish's famously short memory.
For Chesney, the Maui-born singer brings something to the song that can't simply be manufactured. He has praised the “innocence and wonder” in Meola's voice, qualities that fit particularly neatly into a song that disguises a surprising amount of heartbreak beneath animal puns, Hawaiian guitars and an otherwise carefree spirit.
It's a combination that clearly struck a chord with Chesney. Reflecting on the finished recording ahead of the album's release, he simply admitted: “‘Goldfish’ makes my heart happy.”
Colbie Caillat - ‘What We Got Going On’
Colbie Caillat appears on ‘What We Got Going On’, an easy-going snapshot of a relationship that doesn't necessarily need to be defined to be enjoyed.
Chesney's explanation for choosing Caillat is perhaps the most immediate of the three. For him, her voice embodies the atmosphere the song needed: “Colbie defines everything that's great about the West Coast the second you hear her first note,” he explained. “She is joy and California sunshine.”
It's easy to see why that appealed to Chesney. Few artists have built careers so naturally around warmth, sunshine and an easy-going coastal sensibility, making Caillat a particularly natural voice to bring into Chesney's own musical world on Silver Sands Marina.
What has Kenny Chesney said about Silver Sands Marina?
For Kenny Chesney, the real value of Silver Sands Marina lies in its ability to capture the kind of moments in life that can easily pass us by.
“Songs that make you laugh, that make you realize what a moment might actually mean, those things are so important – and we forget all about them,” Chesney explained. “When all the songs line up next to each other, you get a real taste of how life rolls out, and the things you don’t see until it’s too late.”
It's a sentiment that gets closer to what Chesney appears to value about the finished record than any single theme or sound. Some of these songs celebrate the moment while it's happening, while others look backwards at choices, relationships and experiences with the benefit of hindsight.
Chesney has also emphasised the importance of feeling throughout the project, describing songs as things that can “lift you up, make you smile, make you think or break your heart”.
That breadth perhaps offers the simplest explanation of what Chesney wanted from Silver Sands Marina. After more than three decades of making records, he wasn't searching for one particular message as much as songs capable of making the listener feel something.
