Chesney explores that point where something as simple as a phone call becomes difficult and unrecognisable without a definite cause. But the big questions have to be asked, "is there someone else you'd rather be talking to" because "it shouldn't be this hard to talk to me".
But all of that frustration bubbling away has to be released and Chesney's chorus with Moroney does that perfectly. Not too dissimilar to the old fashioned, "let's call a spade a spade" quote, the pair sing, "If this is a fight, then let’s just fight / If we’re doin’ fine, let’s just do fine". In other words, let's stop dancing around this weirdness and face it head on.
"When I hang up the phone / I wanna call you back, but I don't" shows Chesney's awareness of the change in the dynamic. The person he just spoke to is no longer the person he wants to bare his soul to. But why? There doesn't seem to be an acute reason, just maybe a prolonged period of slowly fading away.
And once you acknowledge there's a problem, you have to do something about it. "Where we goin' from here / This just got weird" ends the song in such a real, relatable way. When Jessie Jo Dillon and Donovan Woods’ song got pitched to me, Megan was the only person I could have sing this with me."
On the meaning behind the song, he said that it is "One of those moments where it’s all falling apart, you can see it coming, but there’s nothing you can do. This one’s so conversational, so exact in all the things that get said – ‘you sound tired; what’s that supposed to mean?’– and not said – ‘the strange good-bye, the wanting to call back, but not’– on your way to done.
