The Background

Silver Sands Marina is Kenny Chesney’s 21st studio album, serving as a reminder to “be present where we are and enjoy all the little things getting where we’re going”.

This project explores what it is to be human and appreciate the vibrancy of life, whatever the circumstance. There is an underlying message to live each moment completely, and know when to squeeze tight or when to let go. It is born out of a life lived fully. One that has sat in the dark and learned to be comfortable with true vulnerability and transparency.

Chesney closes the album with 'Shot Glass', a beautifully simple ache of a song that explores the unanimous choice to celebrate the highs and lows, whatever their size, with a small measure.

The Sound

Chesney’s inimitable vocals lilt softly over the top of his breezy guitar, evoking images of sandy serenades at late night beach campfires. The song is weighted by its significance, with the lyrics and acoustic guitar doing the heavy lifting.

A simple melody and a shoulder swaying beat opens up to some electric guitars built for a poignant moment built for the kind of intimacy you can only get in a stadium. It’s a lighters in the air style track that fans will feel deeply from the barrier to the nosebleeds, as Chesney weaves his lived truth into those simple chords for 3 minutes.

The Meaning

Chesney's closing song, ‘Shot Glass’, is an introspective track that contemplates the size of hopes and dreams, loves and losses, wins and failures, and how ultimately, whatever the magnitude, it all ends in that tiny tumbler of liquor.

His first two verses note some poignant moments of his early life and career, "my first kiss, my first car / Amazing Grace on my first guitar", and asks the question, "tell me how does all of that / fit in a shot glass". He's referencing all the times he's celebrated the highs of life with a shot.

His chorus moves on to acknowledge how the tiny measure of liquor represents so much of who he is and what he's been through, "so here's to you and my checkered past / I'm gonna shoot it down and not look back".

His next verse holds heavy emotion, referencing a love lost. It could be a relationship or a friend, but it holds magnitude far greater than a shot glass. It pulls a different meaning from his question, "how does that fit in a shot glass", implying that a shot has never been enough to negate that pain.

Reconnecting with his roots, he acknowledges his "daddy's gun, mamma's silver cross / that part of me that just got lost". A nod to his East Tennessee upbringing and his work to not let that go.

What has Kenny Chesney said about ‘It Just Got Weird’ featuring Megan Moroney?

In a statement, Chesney said that 'Shot Glass' was like "distilling life to it's truest form".

"Talk about the heart of what country music – the way Kris and Willie and Jones sang it – is supposed to be," he said, "talk about the simplest melody that goes straight into your soul. ‘Shot Glass’ is all those things. And it stopped me in my tracks when I heard it the first time."

"My friend Brett James and Tony Lane, who writes hard country songs that’re pure poetry, must’ve got to talking about the power of an acoustic guitar and how certain bits of life define you – and also how when it all falls apart, or comes together, it always ends up in a shot of whiskey, or rum, or tequila. That little glass holds it all and then some; you can toast it, shoot it or just swallow and wince, but it’s all there.

"All my plans and all my schemes
All my hopes and all my dreams
Tell me how does all of that
Fit into a shot glass
-
My first kiss, my first car
Amazing Grace on my first guitar
Tell me how does all of that
Fit into a shot glass
-
It ain’t that big, it seems so small
Still somehow it holds it all
So here's to you and my checkered past
I’m gonna shoot it down and not look back
-
All her love, her daydream eyes
Her first hello, her last goodbye
Tell me how does all of that
Fit into a shot glass
-
It ain’t that wide, it ain’t that tall
Still somehow it holds it all
So here's to you and my broken past
I’m gonna shoot it down and not look back
-
Daddy’s gun, mamma’s silver cross
That part of me that just got lost
Tell me how does all of that
Fit into a shot glass
Tell me how did all of that
Fit into a shot glass"
