Arriving as the fourth single from Kenny Chesney's 2026 album, Silver Sands Marina, ‘Goldfish’ finds Chesney teaming up with fast-emerging artist, Lily Meola’, for a playful duet.
The light-hearted offering pivots around a heartbroken title-character who finds himself wishing he could take Ted Lasso's famous advice quite literally, and be a goldfish. If he had the famously short memory of a goldfish, he could forget his heartbreak.
The Sound
‘Goldfish’ is a traditional-leaning country offering, with Chesney leaning into the ‘90s-inspired sound of his earliest material, which we don't get to hear too often these days due to his penchant for beachside country anthems. Meola's intricate vocals drift in and out, producing enchanting harmonies throughout the jovial chorus.
The Meaning
Over the course of ‘Goldfish’, which was written by Tia Sillers, Tenille Townes and Gordie Sampson, our protagonist reels off a number of animals and some of their defining characteristics. He considers how mayflies, for instance, only live for one day, while a penguin generally stays with its chosen mate for an entire lifetime.
Some of the animals mentioned feel a little less relevant to his heartbreak, such as the fact that a puma has a great “vertical leap”, or that a crocodile can “kill you with a smile”.
But all these charming images come together to lay the foundation for his declaration in the hook that, if he could choose between any creature, he'd be a goldfish.
There's a widespread belief that a goldfish has a three-second memory - something that famously made its way into Ted Lasso as one of the titular coach's main cri-de-coeurs. In reality, goldfish have slightly longer memories that can last up to months, but for the purpose of this wistful song, it's an inventive way of showing how desperately our narrator longs to forget the anguish of his break-up.

In an official statement ahead of the release, Chesney explained what first drew him to this tongue-in-cheek ode, “To hear something so creative, something that breaks all the rules and brings back that classic old school wordplay, you want a video that’s just as much fun. Here’s this guy going through so much heartache, sitting in a bar ‘drunk as a skunk,’ but the way the song tells it, it’s so light-hearted you almost don’t realize how much pain he’s in. How do you capture that?”
