Many country music fans see the oncoming festivities of late December as an excuse to dust off one of George Strait's old Christmas albums, or perhaps even Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood's homey collaboration, Christmas Together.
It's safe to say that Colter Wall is not that kind of country music fan. On Wednesday, the Saskatchewan lyricist posted a snippet of him covering Merle Haggard's forlorn track, ‘Don't Give Up on Me’.
He accompanied with the tongue-in-cheek caption, ‘Keepin the Christmas songs at bay with Haggard deep cuts’.
Could Colter Wall just be laying the groundwork for a surprise Christmas album? As fun as that would be, we suspect not.
Either way, fans will see Wall's rugged, crestfallen croons as a welcome injection of traditional country into the usual stream of pop-infused Christmas anthems.
The video follows closely behind Colter Wall's announcement of a February 2023 tour across the US, which will take him to a variety of venues in Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Arizona and Arkansas, before finishing up with a two-show two-step in Texas.
