Although his fans are still excitedly devouring his acclaimed June album, Whitsitt Chapel, Jelly Roll has treated them to a brand new surprise single, ‘Dragging These Roots’.
The track has been released as an Apple Music exclusive, as part of the streaming platform's new ‘Lost & Found’ series, which aims to showcase ‘the songs that got away’ from leading writers.
The first ‘Lost & Found’ release is accompanied by an interview with Jelly Roll hosted by one of Nashville's leading songwriters, Lori McKenna, who recently spoke to Holler about her own creative process.
In tandem with the unveiling across their socials, Apple Music underlined the main objective of the new series is to provide a platform where ‘demos from today’s best songwriters are taken from the vault and brought to life by your favorite country artists’.
Jelly Roll's offering, which was penned by Ben Hayslip, Josh Thompson and Jesse Frasure (also known as ‘DJ Telemitry’), features Jelly's charismatic, raspy vocals snaking along a thunderous backing.
Thematically, although not written by Jelly himself, the lyrics touch on a similar feeling to that expressed in his Whitsitt Chapel stand-out, ‘Unlive’. ‘Dragging These Roots’ capture Jelly Roll's evolution and progression following the struggles of his past, while still acknowledging that he will always be a product of his upbringing (“Dragging these roots like a bag of bones / I guess where I'm from won't let me go”).
It's not a regretful song, though, as Jelly Roll decides to embrace the fact that he wouldn't be who he is today if he hadn't grown up with the difficulties and formative experiences of his youth (“Yeah, you can bring a shovel / But it ain't worth the trouble / Can't dig up what's in your heart”).
Apple Music's new ‘Lost & Found’ program will spotlight five more unreleased tracks that have been unearthed from the songwriting vault, with one demo being made available per month. Each release will be coupled with an interview and radio episode.
