Having first teased his new single, ‘Mississippi Or Me’, back in 2019, it's safe to say listeners have had ample time to become familiar with Riley Green's sinuous down-home anthem.

Now, thankfully, Riley Green has granted fans their wish, with the official studio version of ‘Mississippi Or Me’ being made available on all platforms today (Friday, August 11). Although the fact that it's taken the best part of four years to release ‘Mississippi Or Me’ might suggest Riley Green was unsure as to whether he wanted to record it, speaking to Holler, the ‘I Wish Grandpas Never Died’ hitmaker underlined this is far from the truth.

Riley Green emphasised, “I’ve wanted to cut this song since the day I wrote it”. While the reason he didn't release it sooner remains unclear, it seems he's just been waiting until the time felt right. Regardless, we're hoping ‘Mississippi Or Me’ will feature on Green's upcoming album, alongside his recent Luke Combs collaboration, ‘Different ‘Round Here’.

‘Mississippi Or Me’ finds the bearded crooner wondering whether a returning flame has come back for his affection, or whether she was simply feeling homesick for “cotton field stretchin' nearly county wide / The cool delta mornings or Jackson nights”.

Despite the hesitance and skepticism Riley Green exudes throughout the song, it's clear throughout that he desperately hopes the ex-girlfriend has indeed made her way back to the Magnolia State to be with him (“Was it a midnight blanket on a river bank / Or two names on a Tupelo water tank / Is it somethin' bout a boy back home that your heart still needs / Were you missin' Mississippi or me?”).

‘Mississsippi Or Me’ is packed with the visceral scene-setting and nostalgic lyricism that Riley Green has become known for. It appears his new album will once again be grounded in the bucolic imagery that pervades singles such as ‘Hell Of A Way To Go’ and ‘Different ‘Round Here’.

After hearing the studio version of ’Mississippi Or Me’, it's safe to say we're hoping Riley Green's upcoming project is given an official release date sooner rather than later.
