Cole Swindell took home the first accolade of the evening at the 2023 ACM Awards, as he triumphed in the category for Song of the Year with his smash hit single, ‘She Had Me At Heads Carolina’.
The high-octane track was co-written by Swindell, Thomas Rhett, Jesse Frasure, Mark D. Sanders, Tim Nichols and Ashley Gorley.
Ahead of the ceremony, Gorley was honoured with the award for 2023 ACM Songwriter of the Year, and the success of ’She Had Me At Heads Carolina’ underlined why this was clearly the right call.
The fan-favourite song became Swindell's fastest-rising single, spending four weeks at No. 1 in fall of 2022, and originally appeared on his acclaimed Stereotype project.
It was a fitting moment when Cole Swindell and his team of writers accepted the award, with Swindell having just taken the stage moments before for an electrifying rendition of the ‘She Had Me At Heads Carolina’ alongside Jo Dee Messina.
The song interpolates Jo Dee Messina's 90s country anthem, ‘Heads Carolina, Tails California’, making their joint rendition of the track all the more special.
Swindell's award was the first of the night, with other 2023 ACM Award winners including Old Dominion for Group of the Year and Brothers Osborne for Duo of the Year.
