Brandon Lake has shared a new snippet of his eagerly anticipated new song, ‘How Good God Is’, with fans clamouring for the ‘Gratitude’ hitmaker to give us a release date.
First teased back in June, ‘How Good God Is’ finds Lake reflecting on all the wrong-turns in his life that he now feels grateful for, because they taught him about God's grace. Rather than feeling shame or regret when he thinks of his mistakes and the traits he used to embody, he thanks God for using those low moments to remind him of how loved he is (“Thank God for the weakness that showed me His strength / Thank God for the firе that forged me with faith / If He sparеd me from drifting as far as I did / Then I never would have ever known how good God is”).
With Lake uploading a new snippet of ‘How Good God Is’, coupled with what looks to be a clip from a visualiser or lyric video, it feels like the release date is fast-approaching. This latest clip comes after Lake shared an image of the lyrics sheet earlier in the month, alongside some studio shots of the ‘King of Hearts’ singer-songwriter.
Penned with Jonathan Smith, Derrick Southerland and Emily Weisband, ‘How Good God Is’ has seemingly been born from Lake's country-leaning writing sessions, which have also featured the likes of Thomas Rhett, Tyler Hubbard, Russell Dickerson, HARDY, Dan + Shay, Lainey Wilson, Bailey Zimmerman and many more.
The ambience of ‘How Good God Is’, though, feels aligned with a more typical Contemporary Christian Music blueprint, compared to the country-crossover spirit that underpins recent releases such as ‘When a Cowboy Prays’ with Cody Johnson, ‘Just Believe’ with Bailey Zimmerman and ‘The Jesus I Know Now’ with Lainey Wilson.
Having said that, even when he is venturing into the country space, Lake has made a point of remaining true to his CCM roots, and still infusing that rousing, soul-stirring atmospheric.
It seems Lake is gearing up to release ‘How Good God Is’ very soon, and given how extensively he's been teasing it, it feels like this will be a cornerstone of his next chapter of music.
With Lake having hinted at more country collaborations on the horizon with the likes of HARDY, Tyler Hubbard, Dan + Shay and Russell Dickerson, we're hoping that, after he drops ‘How Good God Is’, he'll announce a full-blown country-CCM album.
For the full lyrics so far to Brandon Lake's ‘How Good God Is’, see below:
“I didn't know the Spirit 'til I felt His power
And I didn't see the light 'til He opened my eyes in my darkest hour
I didn't know the Lion 'til I heard His roar
When I was surrounded and couldn't fight without Him not one second more
-
Thank God for the anger that forced me to pray
Thank God for the silence that taught me to wait
If He spared me from breaking, and God knows I did
Then I never would have ever known how good God is
-
Thank God for the weakness that showed me His strength
Thank God for the firе that forged me with faith
If He sparеd me from drifting as far as I did
Then I never would have ever known how good God is
No, I never would have ever known how good God is
-
Thank God for His kindness to give up His Son
To sit there and watch as He says "It is done"
If He spared Him from thorns and the nails through His wrists
Then I never would have ever known how good God is
I never would have ever known how good God is
-
God is good
God is good
God is good
No, I never would have ever known how good God is
I never would have ever known how good God is”
