Brandon Lake has taken to Instagram to tease a brand new track, donning it “the most country song I've ever written”.
Brandon Lake has become synonymous with Christian music, but is increasingly venturing into the Nashville space and the wider country community with the genre being so deeply rooted in Gospel beginnings. And despite having already collaborated with Lainey Wilson, Bailey Zimmerman, Cody Johnson and more, this newly teased track might be his clearest step into the genre yet. He mentions how, “This video has been living in my drafts for a while now…” sharing just a 36 second clip of himself playing the currently untitled song.
The song appears to turn Lake’s idea of a perfect Southern weekend into music, with steaks on Friday and Saturdays spent supporting the Clemson Tigers. The comments are filled with Clemson fans, rival teams and enough college football arguments to prove the song had landed exactly where it was intended!
If this is what we think it is, and more of a deliberate move towards country, then it hasn’t come from nowhere. ‘Hard Fought Hallelujah’ with Jelly Roll introduced him to a huge audience beyond Christian music, reached the all genre Top 40 and earned Lake his first CMA Award nomination. Since then, Lake has been hinting at a full-blown country project, featuring songs written during a Nashville retreat earlier in the year.
There is no title or release date yet. In fact, by admitting it had been sitting in his drafts and asking fans what they thought, Lake appears to be testing whether it should be released at all. It follows the arrival of ‘How Good God Is’, which is already cementing itself as another hit-in-waiting, with Lake then performing the unreleased ‘Bones and Boots’ and ‘Hell No’ during his recent tour-stops.
Judging by the number of people already shouting “Go Tigers” in the comments, it probably won’t be staying in drafts for long!
