Anne Wilson has opened up about how much she was struggling with her self-esteem and self-doubt earlier in the year, with the Kentucky native penning her new single, ‘Who I Am To You’, about how God and Jesus helped her overcome these struggles.
In a new interview with Morning Cruise, Wilson explains that she was feeling so low that she'd often be crying just moments before going on-stage for her spring 2026 Stars Tour.
Wilson reflects, “This song I'm really passionate about. I wrote it back in April, and this year was one of the hardest years so far. It's been one of the hardest years of my life”.
The ‘Rain in the Rearview’ singer-songwriter goes on, “Especially back in the spring, I had gone through a really, I guess, just like a dark season of identity and, like, believing the lies of the enemy about myself and not God and what God says about me”.
She gets candid about how hard it she found it to deal with these insecurities while being on the road, “And there was a time where I was actually, like struggling so much that I would be wiping my tears right before I'd go on-stage on the spring tour, and just feeling so insecure, feeling like a failure, feeling not good enough, and it really just reminded me through that season...The Lord reminded me just of His goodness, and He was so present, and giving me what I needed”.
The Contemporary Christian Music and Country trailblazer concludes, “But then also just like counteracting every lie with His truth about me - that I'm a daughter of the Most High King, and I'm loved, and I'm cherished, and He has a plan for my life. And so I think this spring, honestly, it was so needed for me to hit that rock bottom place. For me to realize, okay, my identity has not been in the Lord, and now it needs to be put back into Jesus. Yeah, and that that's how this song came about”.
As the host observes, it's refreshing and undoubtedly important to hear Wilson being so authentic and honest with her fans. Given her role as a professional Christian music artist, it can be easy to assume she always has it together and never struggles with her relationship with Jesus, simply because she's singing His praises on-stage.
‘Who I Am To You’ is the first preview of Wilson's next project, with the ‘My Jesus’ crooner keeping the momentum high after her Stars: Blue Hour Deluxe project earlier this summer.
Wilson continues to cement herself as one of the most exciting voices in the increasingly blurred intersection between Contemporary Christian Music and Country, with many now following in her footsteps in attempting to combine to the two genres.
If ‘Who I Am To You’ is anything to go by, then we've got plenty to look forward to from the next chapter in Wilson's stellar catalogue, and we're keeping our fingers crossed we get another single or two from the ‘REBEL’ chart-topper before the year is out.
