The Background:

In June 2026, Anne Wilson started teasing a brand new song, ’Me & Jesus’, inspired by the passing of a close friend, Carly, at the age of just 22. Carly had become a fixture on Wilson's tours, ministering to the Kentucky native's ‘Hey Girl Nation’ fanbase.

The song finds Wilson reflecting on the grief and turmoil she has been experiencing, before underlining that, through all the pain, her relationship with Jesus has served as her stabilising rock. Few artists are able to capture the uniquely devastating and confusing feelings that come with grief as viscerally as Wilson, as she showcases throughout her career when meditating on the loss of her brother, Jacob. ‘Me & Jesus’ arrives as part of Wilson's Stars (Blue Hour Deluxe) album.

The Sound:

Wilson keeps the composition sparse and stripped-back throughout ‘Me & Jesus’, mirroring the intimacy and vulnerability of the song's message. For the majority of the track, we hear the ‘REBEL’ crooner's powerful vocals alongside a gentle piano.

As the song approaches its rousing conclusion, Wilson provides some additional backing vocals and the instrumental swells in intensity, mirroring the dawning and comforting realisation where Wilson reminds herself that Jesus is always there for her.

The Meaning:

What's particularly refreshing about ‘Me & Jesus’ is the way in which Wilson does not pretend to have a perfect, pristine prayer life, where all she does is express her gratitude for God's gifts. She admits that, lately, she's been struggling to know what to say when praying to Jesus, due to the crushing grief she's been feeling.

But even so, crucially, Wilson never stopped talking to Jesus. She outlines how, when everything feels like it's going wrong and it's hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel, she hears a faint whisper reassuring her that, ultimately, everything will be okay.

Wilson underlines that being a Christian does not mean being happy or peaceful all the time, rather, it's important to honour whatever you might be feeling, and to know that, regardless of how bad things might seem, Jesus will always be there to protect you and keep you safe (“There’s a time to laugh, a time to cry / A time to sit and wonder why / The world don’t always go the way you thought the world should go / When the valley walls are closing in / A still small voice is whispering / “You know you’re not alone” / So, I know I’m not alone / It’s me & Jesus”).

What has Anne Wilson said about ’Me & Jesus’?

During a heartfelt video shared ahead of its release, Wilson explained how ‘Me & Jesus’ was inspired by the loss of a close friend, Carly, “In February of this year, I lost a really sweet friend of mine. She passed away unexpectedly and it was so heart-wrenching walking through that time. There were so many questions, so many moments of struggle wrestling with the Lord of ‘Why God’ and ‘Why Carly’, 22 years old and so young, leaving behind beautiful parents and a brother”.

The ‘Rain in the Rearview’ singer-songwriter went on to share how, through all the heartbreak and grief, she has been leaning on her faith more than ever, “And I think that time in my life really taught me a lot. It taught me so much about Jesus and His kindness and His grace, and preciousness kind of in the midst of that whole time. It was such an interesting time in my life, and so I ended up writing a song a couple days after she passed away that means so much to me. The song is really, really, really personal and I've waited to share it on social media until I felt like it was the right time. So I wanted to share it with y'all now. This song was written about my sweet, precious friend Carly. It's called, ‘Me & Jesus’”.

“Me & Jesus, we’ve been talking
If I’m honest, I don’t really know what to say
I got questions needing answers
I got a heart that trying handle so much more than it can take
Life can be that way

There’s a time to laugh, a time to cry
A time to sit and wonder why
The world don’t always go the way you thought the world should go
When the valley walls are closing in
A still small voice is whispering
“You know you’re not alone”
So, I know I’m not alone
It’s me & Jesus

He’s Right beside me step for step
He knows I’m prone to wander
And He knows sometimes I forget
If I got Jesus
I got all I’ll ever need
When my hope is barely holding on
He’s holding on to me

There’s a time to laugh, a time to cry
A time to sit and wonder why
The world don’t always go the way you thought the world should go
When the valley walls are closing in
A still small voice is whispering
“You know you’re not alone”
So, I know I’m not alone
It’s me & Jesus
It’s me & Jesus

Though I walk through the valley
I know who walks beside me
Though I walk through the valley
I know who walks beside me
There’s a time to laugh, a time to cry
A time to sit and wonder why
The world don’t always go the way you thought the world should go
When the valley walls are closing in
A still small voice is whispering
“You know you’re not alone”
So, I know I’m not alone
It’s me & Jesus
It’s me & Jesus
Oh, it’s me & Jesus”
