The Background:
Undoubtedly one of the most keenly anticipated songs on Stella Lefty's debut album, Long Way Home, Lefty teased ‘Summer You Were Mine’ extensively across socials ahead of its arrival on August 21st. The uptempo, nostalgic gem is quickly cementing itself as a fan-favourite and one of the most popular tracks from the record.
The Sound:
‘Summer You Were Mine’ leans into the upbeat, joyful ambience that Lefty has become synonymous with since she stormed onto the scene with ‘Thinking ‘bout You’ and ‘Boston’.
It finds Lefty reminiscing on a summer romance across a simple but energising acoustic guitar riff. The ‘Lean In, Kiss Me’ singer-songwriter's sleek, compelling vocals drift across the bright riff, with Lefty again incorporating folk textures into her country sound.
The Meaning:
‘Summer You Were Mine’ begins with Lefty spotting a photo of her with an old flame in his truck, which sends her down memory lane as she wonders whether he misses her, too.
She paints vivid, rose-tinted vignettes of their time together, with Lefty recalling kissing in the rain, before lamenting how, as the weather cooled, so did their romance.
Throughout the song, there's a sense of acceptance that they were nothing more than a summer fling - but even so, Lefty admits she sometimes finds herself wishing they could've made it last a little longer, and hints that she'd like to fall back into his arms. It seems the two exes have remained friends either way, with the giveaway being the fact that she still clearly rides in his truck from time to time.

Guess a fling is a fling for a reason
Our love went cold with the seasons
-
I, I'll always remember you said I look stunning with the rain on my face
I, I'll always remember my makeup was running, but you kissed me anyways
Are you missing kissing in the pouring rain?
I'll admit it, sometimes I wish things never changed
I still think about it all the time
The summer that you were mine
You were mine
-
Feels like it was just July, but it's September and I
I kinda wanna call ya, but I'm scared you'll let it ring
Saw your friends hanging out, they don't look at me now
And damn, I wish it wasn't the way it has to be
Guess a fling is a fling for a reason
Our love went cold with the seasons
-
I, I'll always remember you said I look stunning with the rain on my face
I, I'll always remember my makeup was running, but you kissed me anyways
Are you missing kissing in the pouring rain?
I'll admit it, sometimes I wish things never changed
I still think about it all the time
The summer that you were mine
You were mine
-
Was it love, was it lust?
Did I think it'd end up with my head on your chest?
"I love you" under your breath
Was it wrong to believe we could ever be
More than just a memory?
-
I, I'll always remember you said I look stunning with the rain on my face
I, I'll always remember my makeup was running, but you kissed me anyways
I hope you're missing kissing in the pouring rain
I'll admit it, sometimes I wish things never changed
I still think about it all the time
The summer that you were mine”
