The Background:

A mere month after garnering a buzz online with ‘Thinking ‘bout You’, which arrived in January 2026, Stella Lefty started teasing a new track, ‘Boston’. Lefty released the stripped-back earworm in March, with the track quickly surging to the business-end of Spotify's Viral charts and to an all-time high of No. 42 on the Billboard Hot 100. At the time of writing, ‘Boston’ has over 30 million streams on Spotify alone.

You might be surprised to see Noah Kahan's name listed among the credits for ‘Boston’, with Lefty crediting Kahan due to the melody interpolating that of ‘Stick Season’. Much of Kahan's music is inspired by New England, so the subject matter of ‘Boston’ also feels like an homage of sorts to the ‘Northern Attitude’ hitmaker. Despite being credited, Kahan wasn't directly involved in writing ‘Boston’.

Lefty joins other crooners like Gracie Abrams and Kenny Chesney in singing about the Massachusetts capital. Boston has long been associated with romanticising escapism and personal reinvention, particularly in music. With its picturesque scenes and seasonal weather, the city provides a melancholic back-drop for self-discovery.

The Sound:

The composition is kept pared-down throughout ‘Boston’, with the majority of the track featuring Lefty's clear, vibrant vocals gliding across a bright acoustic guitar and keys combo.

With Lefty often blurring the lines between pop, country and indie-folk, ‘Boston’ feels like one of the Chicago native's most decidedly country offerings to date. The killer hook is undoubtedly the centrepiece, with Lefty's delivery and the uplifting, jubilant instrumental capturing the carefree, rose-tinted nature of the narrative.

The Meaning:

‘Boston’ follows a protagonist who makes it clear she usually doesn't like to stay in relationships too long, admitting to her current partner, “This [is] the part where I'd run”. But with her new love, everything feels different, and as a result, our narrator finds herself on a train to her boyfriend's home-state of Boston. Throughout the song, she expresses incredulity at how the relationship has blossomed in this way despite her assuming it would fizzle out like her previous romances.

Towards the end of the track, the protagonist confesses she doesn't know exactly where this train to Boston is heading, but we assume her partner is about to show her his hometown. This represents a key step in the relationship, and again highlights how things are starting to get serious for our former heartbreaker - but unlike with other flames, our narrator is content to continue moving forward with him. It's a heartwarming, joyful reflection on the feeling of being happily in love.

“On a train back to Boston and we're jumpin' the gun
And I'm tellin' you, baby, this the part where I'd run
But I like it when you're nice, like it when you're nice to me

-

Well, there I was
Swearin' I would never fall in love
All my inhibitions
Walked out the second you said, "What's up?"

-

So, here we go
I'm throwin' out the things I used to know
I hate to admit it
But I guess I'm not better alone

-

On a train back to Boston and we're jumpin' the gun
And I'm tellin' you, baby, this the part wherе I'd run
But I like it when you're nicе, like it when you're nice to me

-

I don't know where it's goin' but don't wanna go back
And usually I'd leave right at the thought of that
But I like it when you're nice, like it when you're nice to me

-

Wakin' up by your side
I see it when the mornin' hits your eyes
You don't want me to leave
Never knew I would be this along for the ride

-

Last month, you were just another someone
But now, we're headin' back to where you come from

-

On a train back to Boston and we're jumpin' the gun
And I'm tellin' you, baby, this the part where I'd run
But I like it when you're nice, like it when you're nice to me

-

I don't know where it's goin' but don't wanna go back
And usually I'd leave right at the thought of that
But I like it when you're nice, like it when you're nice to me

-

I like it when you're nice to me
I like it when you're nice to me

-

On a train back to Boston and we're jumpin' the gun
And I'm tellin' you, baby, this the part where I'd run
But I like it when you're nice, like it when you're nice to me”
