The Background

With country hitmaker Luke Combs’ sixth studio album, The Way I Am, having been building up anticipation for a while, we’re all looking forward to the March 20 release date. To keep us happy until then, though, the megastar has been teasing and releasing tracks from the upcoming record, and judging by what we’ve got so far, this is an album to look forward to.

The North Carolina native released the laid-back, summery track ‘Be By You’ the day before Valentine’s Day, and now he’s following it up with the classic western tale, ‘I Ain’t No Cowboy’. Having posted the first snippet of the track on his socials on March 3, it immediately became an eager release with comments from fans claiming The Way I Am will be his “best album yet”.

With Combs leaving us with a clip from the recording session for ‘I Ain’t No Cowboy’ on March 10, the release date can’t come soon enough. The latest release is a perfect demonstration of the ‘When It Rains It Pours’ singer’s skill for emotional storytelling, all whilst leaning into that cowboy narrative we all know and love.

The Sound

With an acoustic guitar pushing the track forward and Combs' powerful vocals telling our story, this track feels like an immediate classic. As we reach the chorus, percussion is added into the mix and the track is as country as they come. With intstrumentation remaining restrained throughout, we have no doubt this one will be playing across radio stations for a long while.

The Meaning

"If I knew that day I met her
Someday I’d have to forget her
That didn’t stop me from tryna hold her
Like a river holds the rain"

As Combs kicks off the story of ‘I Ain’t No Cowboy’, he introduces us to the love interest of the song - a girl who might have too wild of a spirit. This love story has already happened, but even if the relationship was short-lived, he doesn’t regret it, telling us that even if he knew what was in store for him, being able to hold this girl was worth it. That sounds like a cowboy love story!

"She always wanted wide open spaces
And I tried my best to tame her
I would’ve been better off
Than to have freed a bunch of wild mustangs"

In what feels like a reference to The Chicks and their iconic 1998 single, it sounds like this cowgirl is looking for her own "wide open spaces", needing room to make her big mistakes. Even if Combs tried to encourage this girl to settle down, it was a near impossible task, saying that it would be easier to tame wild mustangs than get this cowgirl to leave her lifestyle behind.

"I ain’t no cowboy, but I wish I was
We would’ve rode off together in the settin’ sun
Instead of watching her ride right out of my life
If I could’ve roped her heart back in
I could’ve been what she needed when
She saddled up and she kicked up a cloud of dust
I ain’t no cowboy and now I wish I was"

Told through a classic cowboy tale, straight from a Western film, Combs tells us what could’ve been, if only he was living a lifestyle just a little closer to that of our wild cowgirl. Instead of roaming the land together though, she’s riding off into the sunset alone, leaving a cloud of dust and memories behind her.

We all know what it’s like to think through all the “what ifs”, and as Combs is working his way through that process, all he can do is wish for who he could’ve been and what he could’ve done.

"If I could’ve been more like John Wayne
Well I could’ve found a way to make her stay
But she was an old red darlin’
And just looking for a prayer and a place to stay
At the end of the day"

Perhaps the most iconic cowboy of them all, Combs is comparing himself to John Wayne. Maybe that would be the way to make this wild-spirited girl stay? Unfortunately, though, a cowboy isn’t enough to keep this girl. After all, she needs her "wide open spaces" – somewhere to stay for a night, not for a lifetime.
