The Background:

After sharing a teaser of ‘My Kinda Saturday Night’ at the start of summer 2025, the snippet went viral across TikTok, with fans begging Luke Combs to drop the infectious, honky-tonkin’ earworm. He left us hanging for a few months, but it was worth the wait when he finally released the jovial track on October 3rd, 2025.

It arrived as part of Combs‘ The Prequel, which also featured ‘15 Minutes’ and ‘Days Like These’, and served as a preview of his new studio album, arriving in “early 2026”.

The Sound:

For the past couple of years, Luke Combs has been leaning into a more introspective, stripped-back sound, epitomised by his deeply personal Fathers & Sons 2024 concept album. That project was rightly lauded by critics, but it's safe to say we've also been craving some of those classic, beers-in-the-air Combs anthems that kickstarted his career - and ’My Kinda Saturday Night’ certainly fits the bill.

It opens with Combs crooning playfully across a wonderfully twangy guitar, with the instrumental building out as the song gathers steam. The rowdy, uptempo and light-hearted feel of the hook feels reminiscent of smashes such as ‘My Kinda Folk’ and ‘When It Rains It Pours’. It finds Combs reminding us that, although he's a dad now and life looks a little different, that doesn't mean he can't still throw down.

The Meaning:

“Dang
I ain't never puttin' WD-40 on this front porch chain
I can't, but I can almost hear that paycheck droppin' in the bank
I don't know what's gonna happen tonight
But there's a good chance it's gonna sound like”

The protagonist of ‘My Kinda Saturday’ is a blue collar worker that's counting down the minutes until his shift ends. He begins by admitting that he's never going to get around to spraying WD-40 on the front porch chain, even though it desperately needs it, before looking forward to the moment he receives his latest paycheck.

“Boots on the back porch, stompin' on the two-four, little bit of longneck clank
Tires on the chert rock, ‘Bubba Shot the Jukebox’, bendin' them guitar strings
Cold can packin' and some old boys crackin' on the rivers and the cooler light
Sure sounds like my kind of Saturday night”

As he gets ready for the prospect of a night of revelry, he starts to paint a vibrant picture for the listener of what he hopes will happen when he clocks off work. He describes a raucous country party, where his boots can be heard stomping gleefully on the hardwood floor and Mark Chesnutt's ‘Bubba Shot the Jukebox’ is blaring.

“Hot damn
You oughta hear a tailgate droppin' on that old Dodge Ram
Or all my rowdy friends
Standin' 'round a bonfire drinkin' singin' ‘Pick Up Man’
Howlin' like some bluetick hounds
Man, I almost hear it now”

In the second verse, Combs adds further details to the picture, making it clear this is a tailgate party with trucks circled up around a bonfire. He drops a reference to Hank Williams Jr.'s country anthem, ‘All My Rowdy Friends’, before paying homage to another legend of the genre, the late Joe Diffie and his iconic hit, ‘Pick Up Man’.
