As Ella Langley continues to sit firmly at the top of the charts, surpassing Morgan Wallen’s ‘Last Night’ as one of the longest-running number ones on Billboard’s Hot Country songs, it’s difficult not to ask, who’s next?

That’s not because we’re bored of Langley or we don’t think she’s deserving - she is (as we argued in this piece earlier in the week), and she's cementing her place at the pinnacle of the country landscape. Rather, this curiosity about Langley's potential successors comes from a place of excitement, as the Alabama native has now opened the floodgates for an array of women in country to follow suit.

What does Langley's ascent - and the explosion in popularity of country music more generally - mean for the next wave of women who are now waiting keenly in the wings?

With country music seeing its biggest peak in decades and the rise of social media fame, this writer’s attention is on the periphery, scoping out who is primed and ready to take centre-stage.

Could we see the new kid on the block, Stella Lefty, take total control following her smash hit, ‘Boston’? Already top of the UK Country Airplay chart, ‘Boston’ is the earworm that has spotlighted Lefty and generated an abundance of chatter about who she is and where she came from. She’s not an obvious country choice, and will likely cause a stir as to whether her music lands in the ‘country enough’ scale, but there’s no denying that she’s a contender. Songs like ‘Boston’, ‘I Know, I Know’ and ‘Thinking ‘bout You’ are the perfect amalgamation of country-pop and Noah-Kahan style lyrics.

Lauren Alaina is also perfectly placed to rise up through the ranks, and has arguably been doing so for the last 15 years. She is comfortable sharing her authentic self, her vulnerability making her an incredibly likeable artist and someone, like Langley, that people want to bet on. That’s before you tap into her success with tracks like ‘What Ifs’, which hit No. 1 one on all of Billboard’s country charts.

Another key figure is Kassi Ashton, who is quietly building an empire that could one day see chart domination. Ashton is a dark horse, but her fierce personality and unapologetic approach to her music has created a committed community around her. She’s had a Billboard Top 40 track, a Keith Urban feature and millions of digital streams already, perfectly honing her craft ready to soak up even more career highs.

One of Langley’s tour buddies who she champions regularly, Gabriella Rose, is no stranger to online fame. With her 2024 viral hit, ‘Doublewide’, Rose suddenly became the voice everyone was talking about. With her catchy hooks, Southern twang and rapidly growing fanbase, it’s not a case of if she’ll top the charts, but simply when.

Stunning audiences across the world at the recent ACM Awards, Carter Faith is full of soul and grit, driven to take those top spots. Her critically acclaimed 2025 album, Cherry Valley, placed her on the map and she has not slowed down a jot since.

Or could it be Langley’s friend and music video feature, Kaitlin Butts? Another artist with visceral lyrics and fire in her heart, Butts has nailed her delivery of meaningful tracks that are both powerful and fun.

And last but by no means least, we have to address everyone’s favourite Yeehaw Meemaw, Emily Ann Roberts. Her endearing online presence has built as much of a fanbase as her music. That’s a formula that feels remarkably Ella-Langley-coded.

The truth is that it’s impossible to say who's next. But what we do know is that women are dominating country music at the moment, and it’s an incredibly exciting time to be a part of it.

Langley hasn’t done this herself, she has simply joined the list of powerhouses that are bringing female-led music to the place it should be. Just like those before her - Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, Reba McIntyre, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson and more - Langley is holding space for those that will come after.

The modern-day Queen of Country's Ladies In Waiting, if you will.
