One of country music's fastest rising stars, Jelly Roll, was announced as the first winner of the evening at the 2023 CMT Awards.
Jelly Roll took home the prize for Digital-First Performance of the Year, for his special rendition of ‘Son Of A Sinner’ on CMT All Access.
The prestigious award celebrates the best performances showcased on CMT throughout the year, and this year's category was filled an illustrious roster of contenders, including Charley Crockett, Chris Young, Ingrid Andress and Scott McCreery.
Jelly Roll's ‘Son Of A Sinner’, which appeared on his much-loved 2021 album, Ballads Of The Broken, was the Nashville native's first ever Country Radio No. 1.
Jelly Roll received the award during the pre-show Red Carpet, and at first he couldn't quite believe he was the winner in such a strong category filled with a range of big-name artists.
The genre-blending maverick dedicated the award to his guitarist, and joked that he was continuing the tradition started by Cody Johnson last year, who also thanked his guitarist when accepting the 2022 CMT award for ‘Dear Rodeo’.
Cody Johnson took home the 2022 CMT Digital-First Performance of the Year, for his memorable version of the song.
The Texas songsmith played the wistful ballad during an appearance on the much-loved CMT Campfire Sessions series.
Jelly Roll is currently gearing up to head out on his eagerly awaited 2023 Backroad Baptism tour, which will be in support of his brand new album, Whitsitt Chapel.
The upcoming project is due to be released on June 2, and will feature a collaboration with Lainey Wilson.
