Following another blockbuster run of shows in 2022, the man that Wall Street Journal dubbed the ‘King of the Road’ is heading out on tour again in 2023.
This time around, instead of doing his usual stadium circuit, Kenny Chesney will be returning to the smaller venues that he played when he was still forging his path to become one of country's most recognisable stars.
As ‘half of my hometown’, Kenny Chesney's 2020 collaboration with Kelsea Ballerini, enjoys continuing success, Chesney will be taking Ballerini out on tour with him for his 2023 dates.
‘Half of my hometown’ was recently nominated for Single of the Year at the 2022 CMA Awards, having previously won the 2021 CMA Musical Event of the Year and Video of the Year.
Chesney outlines the rationale behind the tour, “When a year is as hot and alive as 2022 was, you don’t want to try to recapture that magic. Or maybe it’s me. I still have the sounds of diesel engines and No Shoes Nation in my head – and that made me ask, ‘What else could I do?
What would be something that would put me every bit as much in the music and give No Shoes Nation another reason to believe? How can we reach those people who might not come to stadium shows, who live a little off the obvious path, but who love this music every bit as much...
“And that’s when it hit me: ‘I Go Back’. That song is about holding all those things that shaped you very close, recognizing how special they are – and keeping them alive any way you can.
So, I decided that rather than just go repeat what we did, I wanted to take this band and these songs to a lot of the cities we played on our way up! Let’s call the tour I Go Back – and do just that”.
‘I Go Back’, from Chesney's chart-topping 2004 album, When the Sun Goes Down, has long been a favourite among the fanbase that proudly call themselves the ‘No Shoes Nation’.
It celebrates the power that music has to transport you back to moments from your past - and through his 2023 I Go Back tour, Chesney is aiming to do exactly that.
Chesney is still the only country artist that has been included in Billboard's ‘Top 10 Touring Acts of the Past 25 Years’ for the last fourteen.
His Here And Now 2022 tour, which had to be postponed for two years in a row due to the pandemic, saw the ‘American Kids’ hitmaker performing to over 1.3 million fans.
Kenny Chesney has established himself as the modern-day Tropical Country figurehead, and alongside his tour, fans will also have the chance to hear his island-soaked anthems live at Florida's Gulf Coast Jam and South Carolina's Carolina Country Music Fest in June.
In mid-May, Kenny was confirmed as the replacement headliner for Morgan Wallen at both these festivals, with the latter having to withdraw from the line-up following a re-injury to his vocal chords.
