Megan Moroney - ‘Am I Okay?’

Label: Columbia Nashville

Release Date: July 12, 2024

Album: Am I Okay?

Songwriters: Megan Moroney, Luke Laird, and Jessie Jo Dillo

Producer: Kristian Bush

The Background:

"Am I okay?" It's a question we've all asked ourselves at one point or another, so Megan Moroney's upcoming album of the same name seems poised to be one we can all connect with.

Ahead of its release, the 'Tennessee Orange' star gave fans a taste of the album with singles like ‘No Caller ID’, ‘28th of June’, ‘Indifferent’ and more, but none are quite as relatable as the charismatic title track. Inspired by those head-spinning moments of early love, 'Am I Okay?' finds the hitmaker head over heels, falling fast and asking herself that very question.

In between the instantly lovable mix of breakup bangers and carefree bops, 'Am I Okay?' shines.

The Sound:

'Am I Okay?' kicks off the album, opening the collection with a few pensive strings and calculated strums. It doesn't stay that way for long, though, building up a blanketing of pop country goodness. With its tap-along beat and explosive chorus, the song shines as the instantly lovable introduction to the mix of carefree bops and crowd-ready bangers.

The Meaning:

I checked my pulse and my heart’s still beating
Exhale I think I’m still breathing
Both feet on the ground but something’s changed
I’ve been playing less Black Keys baby
And my friends swear I’ve gone crazy
I don’t know how to act
I don’t know what to say

MeMo isn't going through cardiac arrest; she's checked and she's fine. It's just that she may be falling in love, and well ... that tends to make one feel a little off.

Something has changed within her and she's not sure how to proceed with these feelings about a special someone.

’Cause oh my God he walked in
Like a 6’2” dream heaven sent
He says what he means and he means what he says
And he’s funny and he’s smart and he’s good in (good in)
Maybe love ain’t always what it was
Not crying and dying and messing me up
I think I’m really happy
I think I want to stay
Oh my God, am I okay?

This significant someone is different from any of the other people Moroney has had interest in, but it goes much deeper than the fact that's he's 6 foot 2. He's funny, smart, and above all, genuine, a trait that has seemingly been difficult for her to spot in a lover.

He's gifting her flowers, calling her at reasonable times, and most of all, communicating.

In the midst of this budding romance, she's no longer "crying and dying." She instead feels secure in the relationship, realizing that this person is not looking to break her heart. It's been so long since she's felt like this or been treated this way, it leads her to ask herself: "Oh my God, am I okay?"

In reality, she should be asking if these men she's been dating are okay.

I don’t feel like a sad song soundtrack
The old me doesn’t know how to feel about that
Am I okay? I think I’m okay

Through a few more rounds of the chorus, the artist finally realizes that she is in fact alright; and in the end, she seems happy and hopeful to see where this companionship leads.

What has Megan Moroney said about ‘Am I Okay’?

The star hasn't divulged who her album's title track is about, but she has shared a little about the song, noting the all-too relatable feeling of being weary to dive into something new when you've been hurt before.

"I love how from the title you’d assume it’s a heart-wrenching song, especially since I’m the Emo Cowgirl and everyone thinks I’m so sad all the time,” she explained of the song in a statement. “Really, it’s about meeting someone new and realizing, ‘Oh my god, I’m not miserable anymore. He’s actually making me happy. Am I okay?’”

I checked my pulse and my heart’s still beating
Exhale I think I’m still breathing
Both feet on the ground but something’s changed

I’ve been playing less Black Keys baby
And my friends swear I’ve gone crazy
I don’t know how to act
I don’t know what to say

’Cause oh my God he walked in
Like a 6’2” dream heaven sent
He says what he means and he means what he says
And he’s funny and he’s smart and he’s good in (good in)
Maybe love ain’t always what it was
Not crying and dying and messing me up
I think I’m really happy
I think I want to stay
Oh my God, am I okay?

Who knew guys still brought flowers
Or picked up the phone before a last call hour
And not ’cause they cheated and not ’cause they lied
And not ’cause they’re sort of sorry after a fight
And wait
There’s guys that can communicate
That aren’t looking for a heart to break
Always thought, hell no, no way

And then oh my God he walked in
Like a 6’2” dream heaven sent
He says what he means and he means what he says
And he’s funny and he’s smart and he’s good in (good in)
Maybe love ain’t always what it was
Not crying and dying and messing me up
I think I’m really happy
I think I want to stay
Oh my God, am I okay?

I don’t feel like a sad song soundtrack
The old me doesn’t know how to feel about that
Am I okay? I think I’m okay

’Cause oh my God he walked in
Like a 6’2” dream heaven sent
He says what he means and he means what he says
And he’s funny and he’s smart
and he’s good in (good in)
Maybe love ain’t always what it was
Not crying and dying and messing me up
I think I’m really happy
I think I want to stay
Oh my God, am I okay?

I checked my pulse and my heart’s still beating
Exhale I think I’m still breathing
