"Time kept ticking and you moved on." Megan Moroney first teased on her socials back in March 2024, the post hinting at an ominous date: June 28. While fans wouldn't have to wait that long to hear the new music, the date was actually central to the title of her now multi-million streaming single and, man, was it a day worth forgetting.
Released on March 22, 2024, '28th of June' became a seamless addition to Moroney's great country songbook of breakup hits. What else do you expect from everybody's favorite emo cowgirl?
The 'Tennessee Orange' star has never shied away from more tender arrangements, letting her melodies mirror her emotions. '28th of June' is no different. Powered by stark, haunting piano throughout, the single is a somber yet sparkling display, the story behind the heartbreak ballad unveiled just as much by the delicate keys as it is with her wounding words.
Twenty-eighth of June, it was me and you
Rose petals on the bed, and "I love you"
Written on a happy 1-year card
"Here's to forever, you have my heart"
Drank a bottle of red and opened up another
Danced around the room, holdin' onto each other
Like we were never gonna let go
I was too naïve to know
With the first verse, Moroney sets the scene: rose petals, red wine, a one-year anniversary. It's a glimpse inside a sweet and intimate moment between two people, the lyrics weighty with the promises of a growing love.
Then, the chorus comes and reality sinks in. The lines were only a memory, one that now aches to recall.
Just 'cause something's good don't mean it lasts
By fall, we fell apart, and just like that
Time kept tickin', and you movеd on
Another 365 have come and gonе
Today would've been a day that we'd celebrate
And now it's just another Tuesday
From the chorus, it seems every June 28 is a reminder of a love that has come and gone. Time passed and the singer's lover moved on, but she is stuck with these feelings, forced to face them heart first whenever that anniversary darkens a calendar.
What was once a reason to celebrate is now just another Tuesday.
Twenty-eighth of June, callin' out of work
Wakin' up alone, sleepin' in your shirt
Wonderin' if you think about me
Are you really already happy?
Come on, babe, don't say it's true
That she loves you like I still do
Say I still cross your mind
And it's eating you alive
Every June 28 after has meant one more lonely morning, thinking about the love she once had and wondering if her former partner is thinking of her too. She breaks her heart over and over asking herself if that person is truly happy now without her.
The twenty-eighth of June will come one day
I'll wake up and be okay
But the rain outside says, "It won't be today"
As the song comes to a close, she seems to tell herself that one day a June 28 will come and go and she won't feel the hurt and the want. I'll wake up and be okay, she asserts. One day, it'll be just another Tuesday. But that day is not today.
In an interview with Music Row, Moroney confirmed that she had written "28th of June', 'Indifferent' and 'The Girls' all in the same day" once the title-track of her sophomore album, 'Am I Okay?', had come to life.
Calling it "one of her most vulnerable offerings yet", Holler described it on release as “enchantingly hazy”, describing it as a song that “pivots around the poignant juxtaposition between the sweet, intricate instrumentation and the incisive, melancholic edge of the lyricism".
While Moroney hasn't ever confirmed whether the song tells a true story, it represents a universal reflection on pain and grief for a lost relationship, something the '6 Months Later' singer has become a pro at refining into song.
A year on from its release, '28th of June' has become a faux-national celebration day for Megan Moroney fans, with Moroney even taking to social media to post the songs' lyrics on the fateful day.
