For the next instalment of her Honeysuckle Friend Sessions, Rachel McIntyre Smith and Julia DiGrazia get together for a mash up of a '90s country classic from The Chicks' with one of our favourite songs from Hailey Whitters. And it's all thanks to Gabe Lee's Christmas party.
Orginally released as the The Chicks' second single off 1998’s major label debut, Wide Open Spaces, 'There’s Your Trouble' went on to become their very first No. 1 single on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles in the August of that year, and the following year, the band won a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the song.
Written by songwriters Mark Selby and Tia Sillers, the song is about two best friends who can’t seem to figure out they should be together. Written when the songwriters were still just good friends themselves, five years later Selby and Sillers did actually become a couple.
At least in 'Everything She Ain't,' Hailey Whitters already realises that she and the objection of her affections are perfect for each other, even if he hasn't quite figured it out yet. He's still canoodling with some other random girl seemingly unaware of Whitters' feelings, so she takes the opportunity to list of all the reasons why he should be with her instead.
"‘Everything She Ain’t' was the last song I wrote and recorded during the writing process for Raised," Hailey Whitters explained to Holler. "It's been such a pleasant surprise seeing the life that song has lived and opportunities it has created and new fans it's introduced my music to. That song unlocked a door in my creative process and it's been so fun and fulfilling both in the writing room and studio to continue to find ways to cast new light on the traditions of country music that's been so foundational to my sound”.

"When I was creating my new EP, I thought to myself, 'What's a project called Honeysuckle Friend without any friends on it?' This led me to the idea for the Honeysuckle Friend Sessions, a companion video series where I invite my musician friends to my home to cover a song with me," Rachel McIntyre Smith explains about how the idea for the project came about. "Over the past few years, I have been fortunate enough to meet some very kind and talented musicians. I wrote down a list and started reaching out to them one by one. Some of them were people that I had only interacted with on social media and some were very close friends. Regardless of our relationship prior to recording, I left every single session feeling like I was honeysuckle friends with my collaborator."
“I met Julia last year at Gabe Lee’s Torrez Music Group Christmas Party," she says. "She was so friendly and incredibly talented. I knew when I launched this series that I had to ask her, and I’m so happy that she agreed. We had a lot of fun hanging out recording this. Julia has performed this mashup in her live shows so she suggested it. It’s such a fun lively medley of '90s and current country. Hailey Whitters and The Chicks are two of my favorites, so I instantly loved the mashup idea. I really like how this one turned out. Our voices blend together well, and Julia’s fiddle makes it pop!”
“Such a fun collaboration!" Julia DiGrazia concurs. "We met at a Christmas songwriter party that Gabe Lee put together last year. When Rachel asked me to be a part of her video series for her EP, ‘Honeysuckle Friend,’ I was honored! I knew we had to do something cool, and I have had this The Chicks/Hailey Whitters mashup stuck in my head for weeks. Very happy we were able to bring this to life!”
I hope Holler gets invited to this Christmas Party next year!
