After weeks of anticipation, Riley Green has finally made his acting debut in Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals, with Green appearing as the struggling musician, Garrett.
The episode kicks off with a mysterious coach pulling up near Kayce's ranch, with Garrett stepping out, guitar in hand. Then, when Kayce's son, warns Kayce that there's a strange man approaching, they all ride over. There's a frosty exchange, before Kayce and Garrett break into broad grins, as they reveal they're old army buddies.
We learn that Garrett and Kayce - portrayed by Luke Grimes - were in the same four-man team alongside Cal (Logan Marshall-Green), and another, Roner, who's fate they refuse to talk about for most of the episode (and we won't ruin it with a spoiler). Garrett is a struggling musician, forlornly declaring, “Music's my only escape”.
Somewhat amusingly, Green plays an Alabama artist who's been “making a name for myself” in Nashville, before joking about his home-state, “The only good thing to come out of there is the I-20”. Given how much the ‘Different ‘Round Here’ singer-songwriter loves Alabama, he must have been reluctant to deliver this line.
During a recent interview with USA Today, Green stressed that, of course, he doesn't echo Garrett's view of Alabama, “I certainly need to clarify that. One thing about my fans, especially my Alabama fans: They know how I feel about being from here, and I am proud of this area where I'm from”. We reckon he's released enough odes referencing his beloved home-state, such as ‘Hell of a Way to Go’, ‘That's My Dixie’ and ‘Get That Man a Beer’, that his fans are pretty clear on where he stands.
Elsewhere in the episode, which finds Kayce welcoming Garrett in as the latter fights some lingering demons leftover from his time in the army, when Kayce raises the prospect of staying on the ranch, Garrett quips, “I may sing country, but I ain't no cowboy”.
For die-hard Green aficionados, this feels like an inside joke, given how many cowboy-songs the ‘Worst Way’ hitmaker has. His 2026 tour is even called ‘Cowboy As It Gets’, after his popular stand-out from 2024's Don't Mind If I Do, ‘As Cowboy As It Gets’.
We won't share exactly how the latest episode of Marshals - which airs every Sunday - concludes, but let's just say it seems Garrett is excitingly set to be a recurring character. We're looking forward to seeing him perform his newly released single, ‘My Way’, which has already been teased as being part of the Marshals soundtrack.
