After dropping one of the stand-out projects of 2024, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, in April, it looks like ERNEST is back in album-mode, with the ‘Flower Shops’ hitmaker teasing a summery new unreleased track, seemingly titled, ‘Went and Did It Anyway’.
The breezy, uptempo track finds ERNEST crooning coolly about a recent romance, with the ‘Summertime Flies’ singer-songwriter outlining how he warned his old flame that, when she got off that flight from the West Coast and landed in his small town, it wouldn't take long before she'd fall for their rural, bucolic way of life.
Across the warm, energising instrumental, ERNEST recalls how he told his partner he knew she'd end up breaking his heart, but that didn't stop her, “She just flew in from California, said she'd never seen a little town / I'm ‘bout to show her one / I told you that this would happen, baby / Don't blame me when it comes back around / You knew when you hurt me, it would kill me / But you went and did it anyway”.
It's a feel-good yet heartbroken earworm in the trademark ERNEST mould, and we're already looking forward to hearing the full studio version of ‘Went and Did It Anyway’. Although there's no release date yet, it appears the Nashville native is already working on his next record, so we're hoping it won't be long before the song drops.
Some fans have been speculating that ERNEST's good buddy and frequent collaborator, Morgan Wallen, might be featured on ’Went and Did It Anyway’, after the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper made a rare appearance in the comments section on ERN's teaser video. Morgan Wallen simply responded, “Peak”, with ERNEST jokingly replying with the ‘painting nails’ emoji. A handful of listeners claim they can hear Wallen's voice in the mix for ‘Went and Did It Anyway’, but as far as we can tell, the brief, newly unveiled clip only includes ERNEST's vocals. Elsewhere in the comments, Teddy Swims echoed Wallen's sentiments, sharing, “Absolute smash”.
‘Went and Did It Anyway’ certainly has the infectious, bittersweet hook and beat-driven sound that Morgan Wallen loves, and we know ERNEST has been writing with both Wallen and HARDY, after the trio shared a series of photos from a retreat last year.
Jordan Dozzi has since confirmed that Wallen was not a co-writer on ‘Went and Did It Anyway’, with Dozzie having penned the track with ERNEST, Chandler Walters and Brad Clawson. We'll have to wait and see whether Morgan Wallen is indeed a guest vocalist on ‘Went and Did It Anyway’, but either way, this is already shaping up to be a 2025 summer heater - emphasised by the fact that ERNEST is performing the unreleased track shirtless from a boat bobbing happily in the sunshine.
ERNEST recruited Morgan Wallen for ‘Hangin’ On’, one of the many highlights from NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE, with the prolific duo also linking up in the past on ‘Flower Shops’ and ‘Cowgirls’, as well as penning a slew of No. 1 singles together, such as ’More Than My Hometown’, ‘I Had Some Help’, ‘You Proof’ and ‘Everything I Love’.
ERNEST has been teasing new music for a few months now, with the trailblazing Music City songsmith uploading snippets of unreleased tracks such as the vulnerable ‘The World Without You In It’, the light-hearted ‘Turn Me Up’ the rap-inspired ‘Nowhere Tennessee’ and the traditional-leaning, honky-tonkin’ ‘Gettin‘ Gone’, the latter of which is rumoured to be a collaboration with Snoop Dogg.
