Noah Kahan delivered on his promise to bring up Avery Anna for a duet during his REDWEST Festival headline set, after Anna shared an acoustic rendition of Kahan's ‘Your Needs, My Needs’ via TikTok as her unofficial audition to perform with him.
After making Anna sweat for a day, Kahan eventually responded, “I have been trying to comment on this for 24 hours but was logged out of my account lol you are amazing and I am a huge fan. Let’s sing this exact arrangement at the fest!!!”
Ultimately, though, they ended up opting for a beautiful cover of Jason Isbell's ‘If Were Vampires’, which follows a protagonist fantasising about the idea of becoming immortal, so he'd never have to be parted from his wife (“It's knowing that this can't go on forever / Likely one of us will have to spend some days alone / Maybe we'll get forty years together / But one day I'll be gone / Or one day you'll be gone”).
Kahan gave Anna a warm welcome, introducing her to the Salt Lake City crowd as “one of my favourite current country artists, who I think is just amazing”. Anna has shared a video recap of the heartwarming moment, donning the experience “a dream”.
In her original video, the ‘Indigo’ hitmaker champions Kahan as a major influence, with Anna sharing the Vermont native's penchant for vulnerable, introspective and raw songwriting that doesn't shy away from delving into mental health issues.
Kahan and Anna's enchanting vocals complement each other seamlessly, with the duo capturing the raw emotionality and endearing tenderness that permeates the song.
Kahan released his version of the much-loved Isbell track in May 2023 as a Spotify Singles exclusive, featuring evocative guest vocals from Wesley Schultz from The Lumineers.
We're hoping this on-stage duet at REDWEST Festival 2025 - which was earlier marred by poor weather - paves the way for an official collaboration between Kahan and Anna.
