Morgan Wallen's new single, ‘Smile’, has leapt straight to No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, despite only being released towards the latter end of the chart's latest tracking period.
The ethereal offering, which finds the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter despairing about an impending break-up, arrived as a surprise release on New Year's Eve.
‘Smile’ was accompanied by a cinematic music video, which featured a cameo from Caleb Pressley as the host of a fictional talk-show, Dark Til Daylight - the name of which we think might be a hint as to the title of Morgan Wallen's eagerly awaited new album.
It's a sparse, vulnerable offering that revolves around a powerful piece of storytelling, as Morgan Wallen sees his soon-to-be-ex grinning in a photo, which leads him to forlornly lament how rarely he sees that smile when they're alone together.
‘Smile’ has drawn widespread plaudits since its release, and it's already proving a hit with listeners, with the track earning an impressive Billboard Hot 100 debut of No. 27.
Although this is lower than all three of Morgan Wallen's latest releases, ‘Love Somebody’ (No. 1), ‘Lies, Lies, Lies’ (No. 7) and ‘Spin You Around (1/24)’ (No. 24), ’Smile’ only received three full days’ worth of tracking due to its release on December 31st, 2024.
This Billboard Hot 100 tracking period ran from December 27th, 2024 to January 2nd, 2025, meaning the vast majority of songs received an extra four days’ of streams and sales. On its first day, ‘Smile’ tallied over 1.6 million Spotify streams, with the intricate ballad sitting at just under 12 million streams at the time of writing. ’Smile’ has earned the title of being the Hot 100's highest ranking debut of the week.
As a result, it seems the next Billboard Hot 100 chart, which will be the first full week of tracking since ‘Smile’s release, could see Morgan Wallen vying for a Top 10 - and possibly even No. 1 - finish. Either way, it ensures the momentum remains strong as the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper gears up for his One Thing At A Time follow-up album, which is widely expected to be announced in the coming months.
