The Background:

Morgan Wallen surprised fans in late January with the news that he'd be releasing a re-recorded version of his fan-favourite track, ‘Spin You Around (1/24)’.

In a lengthy statement, the ‘Last Night’ hitmaker revealed how he'd left his duck hunting trip to hit the studio in Nashville to cut a new rendition of the love-song, which originally featured on the singer-songwriter's debut EP, Stand Alone, in 2015.

The reason for this last-minute, Taylor Swift-esque re-recording was the fact that Wallen's old label, Panacea Records, were planning on releasing a 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of the EP on January 26 against his wishes.

In the message, Wallen stressed that he'd done all he could to prevent this from happening, but that the label and his original management team had been undeterred.

As a result, Wallen recorded a new rendition of ‘Spin You Around (1/24)’, the most popular song on Stand Alone, to be released opposite the 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition in hopes of diverting listeners away from the unsanctioned project.

Thankfully, despite the frustrating period it's been for Wallen and his team, he appears to have held onto his sense of humour. He adorned the ‘Spin You Around (1/24)’ artwork with the begrudging quip that he “had to leave the duck woods to make this”.

In addition, the ‘Thinkin’ Bout Me’ chart-topper wrote at the end of his official statement, “I did the artwork myself while in the woods duck hunting. Hope you like it, lol”.

To accompany the release, Wallen announced that he's donating $100,000 from his Morgan Wallen Foundation to the Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals For The Arts (VLPA) program to help prevent up-and-coming artists from ending up in the position he's found himself in with Panacea Records.

The Sound:

The re-recording of ‘Spin You Around (1/24)’ is noticeably stripped-back compared to the 2015 original that featured stormy electric guitars and stampeding drums, which were suited to the Bro-Country era that Wallen emerged out of.

Joey Moi, Wallen's go-to producer, helps to give the new version a crisper, fresher feel by keeping the composition simple, placing the spotlight on his vocals.

While the Tennessee songsmith's original take carries a gritty rasp that he infused into much of his earlier material, his vocal style on ‘Spin You Around (1/24)’ is much more measured. It highlights his progression since that early EP, with Wallen navigating the ebbs and flows of the track much more deftly.

This is especially evident towards the finale as Wallen gives the final verse a much more tender, intricate ambience. Completely drawing in his vocals to match the delicacy of the instrumental, it's a massive departure from the 2015 version as he tried to shift up a gearn.

The Meaning:

“I've been looking at you from across the room
'Bout time I've got my nerve
Well you might tell me boy hell naw
But hell what can hurt?”

The curtains open on Morgan Wallen as he spots a woman at a party, and he feels an urge to go talk to her. However, he struggles to pluck up the courage to make the move as he worries about the woman saying "hell naw" and rejecting him on the spot.

“'Cause I just wanna spin you around and around this dance floor
Get you drunk on a love like mine
Might wind up and steal a couple kisses
Get your digits if I can find the right line
But if you don't do feelings, then baby if you're wiling
I'll do my best to change your mind
The way you stole my heart without a sign
Girl it oughta be a crime”

As he begins to make his way over, Wallen fantasises about dancing all night long with her, likening the feeling of being in love to being intoxicated. Partway through the simmering hook, he introduces the witty lyric, “Get your digits if I can find the right line”, which pivots around the double-meaning of "pickup line" and "telephone line".

He transitions from crooning about "stealing" some kisses from his lover to describing the woman as having unexpectedly "stolen" his heart.

“Got a pretty good feeling I'm taking you home
Gonna love you with all I got
But before we slip out into the night
I just want one more shot
To take your hand”

We get another double-entendre in the second verse, with Wallen outlining how he's going to give their romance "one more shot", while also suggesting another shot of liquor as he asks for another dance.

“I've fought in some bars
Broken some hearts
Ain't never done nothing this bad
Yeah, with one look at me
You became my disease
They don't make no cure for that”

At the ‘Spin You Around (1/24)’ finale, Wallen touches on his rowdy, rebellious spirit, and how he has a reputation for being somewhat of a heartbreaker.

He uses this to suggest that none of that compares to the love and lust he feels for this woman, even calling their romance a "disease" that he can't control or cure.

What has Morgan Wallen said about ‘Spin You Around (1/24)’?

In a heartfelt post shared across his socials, Morgan Wallen explained why he decided to re-record ‘Spin You Around (1/24)’.

“Back in 2014, I went to Florida to try my hand at making original music & songwriting for the first time," he shared. "This led to a recording deal with a local investor & an artist management deal that I deeply regret. Unfortunately, I signed both deals without any legal representation”.

Wallen recalled, “We made 13 songs. Some were ok, most were terrible as I was just learning how to write in general & figuring it all out. I was not the only collaborator, so many of these songs were not my idea nor to my standards. We deemed 5 worthy-enough to make the Stand Alone EP which includes a fan-favorite, ‘Spin You Around’”.

Morgan went on to underline how he's tried everything in his power to stop his old team, noting: “Tonight, those colleagues I parted ways with almost 10 years ago plan to release a 10th Anniversary edition of Stand Alone against my wishes & include 8 unreleased songs, distributing it with the assistance of my former managers. For months I've been exploring every avenue possible to acquire the rights to this old music & keep the quality of my catalog consistent with songs I choose to release & believe in”.

The Sneedville native concluded, “It's gross, greedy & an example of how the dark side of the music business can suck the soul out of artists. I want you to know this is not my new music & I don't want to see this happen to anyone else. I cringe when I listen to these songs & I'm concerned my fans may mistakenly believe this is a new release by me.

"I begin recording my next project at the end of February. I'm feeling inspired creatively & super excited to make more music I'm proud of”.

Might wind up and steal a couple kisses
Get your digits if I can find the right line
But if you don't do feelings, baby if you willing
I'll do my best to change your mind
'Cause the way you stole my heart, yeah the way you stole my heart
Yeah the way you stole my heart without a sign
Girl it oughta be a crime

I just wanna spin you around tonight
I just wanna spin you around tonight”
