During the 2024 BMI Country Awards in Nashville, Morgan Wallen's record-breaking, genre-blending hit, ‘Last Night’ was awarded the coveted BMI Song of the Year accolade.
As the BMI Awards honour the songwriters behind our favourite country tracks, the 2024 Song of the Year gong goes to John Byron and Charlie Handsome, who penned the chart-topping anthem alongside Ashley Gorley and Jacob Kasher, rather than Morgan.
Despite only being released in 2023, ‘Last Night’ has already cemented itself as one of the biggest songs of the 2020s across all genres, with Morgan's heartbroken, trap-infused song spending 16 weeks at the pinnacle of the Billboard Hot 100 last year. At the time, this was the longest-running No. 1 of the decade so far, before Shaboozey's ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ surpassed that tally earlier in November.
Released in January 2023 alongside ‘Everything I Love’ and ‘I Wrote The Book’, ‘Last Night’ ensured the momentum remained sky-high ahead of Morgan Wallen's groundbreaking third album, One Night At A Time, which dropped a couple of months later.
Although Morgan Wallen was not present at the 2024 BMI Country Awards, the Sneedville megastar delivered an eye-catching performance at the 2023 instalment. Morgan offered up a cover of his fellow hitmaker Luke Combs’ ‘Going, Going, Gone’, with Luke returning the favour with a moving rendition of ‘Thought You Should Know’.
Elsewhere during the 2024 ceremony, Riley Green, Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton performed a trio of tributes to Alabama's Randy Owen, who received the BMI Icon Award.
Morgan Wallen is currently hard at work on his eagerly awaited One Thing At A Time follow-up album, which is expected to feature previously teased tracks such as ‘Good to See You Smile’, ‘I Guess’ and ‘Come Back as a Redneck’. Both John Byron and Charlie Handsome are expected to be contributing towards the new project, with fans keenly looking forward to hearing Morgan's next global smash in the mould of ‘Last Night’.
