Morgan Wallen is getting candid about what he has been learning from his relationship with his son, Indigo Wilder, during an episode of Morgan Wallen Radio on SiriusXM.

When asked what ‘humbles’ him in life, Wallen doesn't hesitate, “My son - I'd say that's probably the easiest answer. You know, he doesn't care about any of the things that make me ‘cool’ to however many people, you know, and I love that about him”.

Somewhat amusingly, the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter goes on to quip, “[Indie] also doesn't listen to me all the time, either, and that'll humble you real quick!”

Whether Wallen is saying that Indie likes to listen to music that isn't by Wallen, or whether he's just referring to his son's rebellious streak when he's trying to get him to do something, either way, it's a heartwarming snapshot into their father-son bond. The Sneedville native shares Indigo with his ex-fiancée, KT Smith, with the couple welcoming little Indigo Wilder into the world on July 10th, 2020.

Although Wallen remains a very private person, over the years, he has increasingly opened up about being a father, and the various ways in which it has helped him grow.

During an appearance on Theo Von's This Past Weekend last year, for instance, Wallen reflected, “I think it just gets better and better, the older he gets. I mean, it's always been cool, but you know, he's four years old now, he'll be five this year, just the personality that keeps coming out and the relationship that you build, you know? He's got a little sass on him, he's got a little attitude, which I like”.

He went on to joke that he's secretly fond of the fact that, despite his age, Indie already isn't afraid to speak his mind, “I like that spunk. Like yesterday, my dad was...trying to get him to eat. It's kind of a task to get him to sit still long enough to eat, and my dad was like, ‘Hey man, if you don't eat I'm gonna put you in the bedroom and you gotta go to sleep’...I don't know exactly what my dad said to him, but [Indie] looked at my dad and he said, ‘I don't want you to stay here anymore’”.

Wallen added, though, that he's teaching his son to be a little more discerning when it comes to approaching people, “It's just hilarious...just anything to keep him rocking. But he's a sweetheart...he's almost too sweet, he's too nice to everyone, like, people he doesn't know. It's like, ‘Hey man, we don't like everybody, man! We don't know these people, man’...So I'm trying to teach him a little bit of that”.

Elsewhere during their chat, Wallen revealed ‘Eyes Are Closed’ is Indie's favourite song, “This album that I've been working on, this is the first time where it seems like he's really starting to put two and two together...I would come home after writing and I'd show him songs this time - this is the first time that he's ever cared”.

Wallen movingly opened up about his anxieties, joys and hopes for his relationship with his son on the vulnerable ‘Superman’, which appears on 2025's I'm the Problem.

Across a pared-down instrumental, the ‘Last Night’ hitmaker considers the various wrong-turns and mistakes he has made in his life, and imagines the day he has to explain those to his son: “Now and then, that bottle's my kryptonite / Brings a man of steel down to his knees / Don't always know my wrong from right / Sometimes I'm my own worst enemy / No, I don't always save the day / But you know for you, I'll always try / I do the best I can, but Superman's / Still just a man sometimes”.

‘Superman’ epitomises both the maturity and openness that Wallen has been embracing more and more with each new album. With his latest single, ‘Been By Now’, seemingly kicking off his next chapter, we're excited to see him peeling back more layers and delving deeper into his role as a father on his I'm the Problem follow-up.
