The Background:
First teased on June 5th, 2026, Morgan Wallen thankfully didn't make fans wait quite as long for ‘Been by Now’ as he did back in 2024 when he dangled ‘Love Somebody’ in front of us, before taking months to release it. Just over a month after first sharing that demo, Wallen confirmed that he'd be making ‘Been by Now’ available on July 24th.
It's expected to be the lead single from the Sneedville native's I'm the Problem follow-up album, but Wallen made it clear when speaking about ‘Been By Now’ during his 2026 Still the Problem Tour that he is still formulating what his next chapter looks like.
‘Been By Now’ was penned by Wallen with a selection of his go-to co-writers, Charlie Handsome, John Byron, Blake Pendergrass, Rocky Block and Taylor Phillips. Joey Moi, another of Wallen's longstanding collaborators, takes the helm for the production.
The Sound:
Wallen explores a similarly synth-backed, summery vein to ‘Love Somebody’, with the ‘Last Night’ crooner's signature drawl cutting through a hazy, cushioning instrumental.
It feels like a doubling down on Handsome's comments earlier in the year about wanting Wallen to venture further into the pop space, while his vocals ground each song in country. ‘Been By Now’ captures the breezy, peaceful spirit of the narrative, with our protagonist reaching a state of acceptance about the end of the relationship.
The Meaning:
‘Been By Now’ begins with a protagonist starting up a difficult conversation with their partner, arguing that it's time they both come clean and accept the inevitable. He outlines, “No need to act surprised / I've seen it in your eyes / I feel it when we lie here worlds apart”, making it clear that the passion and spark has been gone for some time, but they've both been clinging on because it's the “easier” option.
Our narrator underlines that they've both been metaphorically “looking at the door”, and wishing the relationship would end, but they haven't been able to break away. Now, though, he stresses that there's no point holding on ‘in case’ things finally work out.
We then reach the hook, with the protagonist telling his partner, “If it was meant to be, we'd have been by now / We wouldn't have to keep tryna work things out”, making the point that, if they were truly soulmates, they would know it by now.
The song pivots around a play on words, where Wallen states that if they were “meant to be” they'd have “been by now”. Elsewhere in the chorus, he croons, “If we were in the stars, they'd have lined right up”, again emphasising that he feels it's simply not their fate to end up together. He suggests that, when it comes to the romantic side of things, they still mesh well, but ultimately, it's just not enough.
What has Morgan Wallen said about ’Been By Now’?
When announcing the ‘Been By Now’ release date, Wallen explained that he's not yet sure what his next era or album will look like, but when he penned this song, he knew it had to be the first solo song fans hear after his widely lauded I'm the Problem record.
Wallen reflected, “I just had a few weeks off tour, so y'all know me, I can't help but work a little bit. I've been in the studio working on my...whatever's next...I don't exactly know what's gonna be next yet. But I do know that this song I'm about to play right now is gonna be my very next single and it comes out on July 24th”.

“No need to act surprised
I've seen it in your eyes
I feel it when we lie here worlds apart
It's easier to stay
It's easier to say
That there's gon' come a day it won't be this hard
-
Nah, we don't even fight like we used to
We don't even care enough to cry no more
It's been a hundred nights since I knew you
How long we gonna keep lookin' at that door?
-
If it was meant to be, we'd have been by now
We wouldn't have to keep tryna work things out
Yeah, baby, we're a breeze when the lights go down
It wouldn't be so hard when we ain't in the dark
If we were in the stars, they'd have lined right up
Yeah, maybe from the start, we been tryin' too much
I know you wanna think that it's what we found
But if it was meant to be, we'd have been by now
Been by now
-
If I could go and find
The moment or the night
My heart went cold as ice, I'd light the match
Don't wanna draw the line
Don't wanna say goodbye
But we're just wastin' time, girl, that we don't have
-
If it was meant to be, we'd have been by now
We wouldn't have to keep tryna work things out
Yeah, baby, we're a breeze when the lights go down
It wouldn't be so hard when we ain't in the dark
If we were in the stars, they'd have lined right up
Yeah, maybe from the start, we been tryin' too much
I know you wanna think that it's what we found
But if it was meant to be, we'd have been by now
Been by now
-
Nah, we don't even fight like we used to
We don't even care enough to cry no more
It's been a hundred nights since I knew you
And I can't spend another lookin' at that door
-
If it was meant to be, we'd have been by now
We wouldn't have to keep tryna work things out
Yeah, baby, we're a breeze when the lights go down
It wouldn't be so hard when we ain't in the dark
If we were in the stars, they'd have lined right up
Yeah, maybe from the start, we been tryin' too much
I know you wanna think that it's what we found
But if it was meant to be, we'd have been by now
Been by now
Been by now”
