As the lights dimmed and Morgan Wallen emerged on the big screens for his now-iconic pre-show walk-out, he seemed focussed, if a tad subdued.

He would be forgiven for feeling a little apprehensive as he prowled towards the stage, given this was his first ever show in Copenhagen, Denmark. Such is his star power, Morgan has skipped the usual circuit of small rooms and intimate venues in Europe, and has instead been lighting up arenas across Sweden, Norway and more as part of his blockbuster 2024 ‘One Night At A Time’ world tour.

During the first two songs, the rowdy ‘Ain’t That Some’ and the half-growled ‘I Wrote the Book’, Morgan was his energetic self, but there was still a palpable feeling of uncertainty as to how his first Denmark crowd would receive him.

Once he’d stopped to catch his breath after this rip-roaring intro, he gazed out across the packed-out sea of flannel-adorned fans, and a knowing smile flashed across his face. Even though it was his first time here, there was no doubt the room was fully behind him, screaming every word and dancing along to every beat.

He spoke warmly about his previous two shows in Stockholm and Oslo, but admitted he could already tell this would be the best show yet. After that, any sense of trepidation had dissipated, and he tore through the hit-filled setlist with his characteristic swagger.

Although electrifying chart-toppers such as ‘7 Summers’, ‘Everything I Love’ and ‘You Proof’ had the crowd leaping to their feet, the most spellbinding portion of Morgan Wallen’s setlist remains his acoustic, stripped-back flurry of tracks. ‘Cover Me Up’, ‘Lies, Lies, Lies’ and ‘Sand in My Boots’ offered Morgan the chance to showcase his uniquely sinuous, evocative vocals, with the Sneedville singer-songwriter lacing extra emotion into each as he stared longingly into the distance. Larry Fleet, Morgan Wallen’s good buddy and one of the evening’s openers, joined his fellow Tennessee native for a moving, enchanting rendition of his soul-stirring ballad, ‘Where I Find God’, which Morgan donned “one of my favourite songs” ever.

It certainly feels as though this intricate section of the set has become Morgan Wallen’s most cherished, and judging by recent unreleased song teasers such as ‘I Guess’ and ‘Good to See You Smile’, it seems we can look forward to hearing more sparse, haunting offerings from Morgan in the near future.

Later in the set, the Royal Arena audience were treated to a sleek performance of the fan-favourite ‘Love Somebody’, which Morgan Wallen confirmed would be released “in the next month or two”. The breezy, ‘80s pop sonics consolidate Morgan’s continued expansion into country music’s neighbouring genres, as did his infectious, trap-infused anthem, ‘Cowgirls’.

He was charming and deeply thankful throughout the performance, expressing his gratitude to the crowd for making him feel a little less homesick.

‘I Had Some Help’ and ‘Last Night’ unsurprisingly drew the most fervent responses from the Copenhagen crowd, with Morgan Wallen striding off stage with another resounding confirmation that his charismatic, genre-blending style is well and truly going global.
