During a star-studded evening of performances and triumphs, one of the most captivating moments of the 2023 BMI Country Awards arrived when Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs took the stage together to cover ‘Going, Going, Gone’ and ‘Thought You Should Know’ respectively.
Morgan's rendition of Luke's chart-topping hit, ‘Going, Going, Gone’, found the Sneedville native infusing extra weight and gravitas into the much-loved track, with his distinctive drawl injecting a new sense of grit and rawness to the forlorn ballad.
‘Going, Going, Gone’ originally appeared on Luke Combs’ acclaimed 2022 album, Growin’ Up, which he followed up this year with his celebrated companion project, Gettin’ Old.
Luke Combs delivered a rousing performance of Morgan Wallen's No. 1 single, ‘Thought You Should Know’, which Morgan wrote with Miranda Lambert and Nicolle Galyon as an ode to his mother.
Luke and Morgan made this rare on-stage appearance together as a way of honouring the fact that they were deemed joint victors of the prestigious 2023 BMI Songwriter of the Year Award.
Many commentators and opposing fans attempt to repeatedly engender a false rivalry between Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen, given their status as the two biggest artists in modern country.
However, it was clear throughout their performances and when they shared a warm embrace after taking the stage that they have nothing but mutual respect and admiration for one another. We're hoping this friendship soon blossoms into the long-awaited collaboration that Luke Combs has teased a number of times in the past.
Elsewhere in the evening, Lainey Wilson, Kenny Chesney, Grace Potter and Ashley McBryde performed touching tributes to esteemed songwriter, Matraca Berg, who deservedly received the BMI Icon Award. Additionally, Morgan Wallen and his fellow songsmiths, Ernest and Charlie Handsome, earned the BMI Song of the Year gong for ‘You Proof’.
