At the 2023 BMI Country Awards in Nashville, Luke Combs paid tribute to his fellow BMI Songwriter of the Year winner, Morgan Wallen, with a special cover of ‘Thought You Should Know’.
The heartfelt ode to Morgan Wallen's mother appears on the Sneedville native's record-breaking 2023 project, One Thing At A Time, which is vying for the Album of the Year accolade at this evening's CMA Awards. ‘Thought You Should Know’ was penned by Morgan Wallen alongside Miranda Lambert and Nicolle Galyon.
Luke Combs’ touching cover was part of a breathtaking moment where he and Morgan took the stage together, as they celebrated their respective songwriting successes.
Morgan Wallen returned the favour by covering Luke Combs’ intricate, stripped-back ballad, ‘Going, Going, Gone’, with each artist striking a perfect balance between honouring the original while still putting their own twist on the track.
Luke Combs’ take on ‘Thought You Should Know’ captured the edge that Morgan infuses into the song, with his husky vocals also bringing a new sense of warm ruggedness to the track.
Luke and Morgan shared the coveted 2023 BMI Songwriter of the Year gong, due to each artist having penned four of BMI's most-performed songs. Luke co-wrote his own chart-toppers, ‘Doin’ This’, ‘Going, Going, Gone’ and ‘The Kind Of Love We Make’, along with Zac Brown Band's fiery anthem, ‘Out in the Middle’, while Morgan helped craft Keith Urban's ‘Brown-Eyed Baby‘ and Corey Kent's ‘Wild As Her’, in addition to his own streaming juggernauts, ‘Thought You Should Know’ and ‘You Proof’.
With Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen sharing a few words and a brotherly embrace when they were awarded the prestigious accolade, fans will be desperately hoping they had time to made plans to link up in the studio in the near future. Luke has previously confirmed the two megastars have been texting about a collaboration.
‘You Proof’ ended up taking the award for 2023 BMI Country Song of the Year. Elsewhere in the evening, the Nashville attendees were serenaded by stellar performances from Lainey Wilson, Kenny Chesney, Grace Potter, Ashley McBryde and more.
