The star-studded opening show of Morgan Wallen's blockbuster double-header shows at Neyland Stadium was undoubtedly a tough act to follow, but somehow, the Sneedville megastar managed to make his second set even bigger and better.
In addition to his usual surprise guests, HARDY and ERNEST, the ‘Last Night’ hitmaker treated the packed-out Knoxville venue to appearances from Miranda Lambert and Darius Rucker.
Before the live music had even started, Morgan Wallen sent Neyland Stadium - home of the Tennessee Volunteers - into a frenzy by bringing out four Vols legends, two-time Super Bowl winner Peyton Manning, UTK football coach Josh Heupel, quarterback Nico Iamaleava and wide receiver Bru McCoy, for his trademark walk-out.
Making the moment all the more special was Manning's decision to don his full Volunteers kit, including the now-iconic No. 16 jersey, which was officially retired in his honour in 2005.
Later in the electrifying set, following explosive numbers such as ’Ain't That Some’, ‘Everything I Love’ and ‘I Had Some Help’, Morgan Wallen serenaded his home-state crowd with a stunning duet of ‘Thought You Should Know’ with Miranda Lambert.
The unexpected collaboration arrived during Morgan's much-loved B-stage segment of the show, which finds him performing from a smaller platform in the midst of the crowd, so as to give those at the back a better view and replicate the feeling of an intimate set.
Miranda Lambert took the helm for the second verse of ‘Thought You Should Know’, which Lambert co-wrote alongside Morgan and Nicolle Galyon for his 2023 One Thing At A time album.
Morgan Wallen explained, “Me and this next artist, we got together one day and wrote a few songs, and this is the first song we ever wrote. I brought this song into the room and I needed some help from a lady’s perspective to help me write a song for my mama”.
Then, after live-wire performances of ‘Up Down’ and ’Cowgirls’ with HARDY and ERNEST respectively - two artists that also opened and joined Morgan Wallen on night one - Morgan brought out Darius Rucker for a stadium-wide sing-a-long of ’Wagon Wheel’.
It consolidated the celebratory, familial ambience that fizzled through the stands. This was Morgan Wallen's homecoming, and rest assured Knoxville showed up for one of their own, with the ‘Lies, Lies, Lies’ crooner performing to 156,161 fans across the weekend - smashing the venue record set by The Jackson 5 over three shows.
All the night two guests were good friends of Morgan Wallen, as was the case on at first Neyland Stadium, which saw the introduction of Morgan's good buddy and Field & Stream co-owner, Eric Church, for a stripped-back rendition of ‘Quittin’ Time’.
Morgan Wallen took the opportunity during his opening night at Neyland Stadium to reveal his next single, the long-teased ’Love Somebody’, will be made available on October 18th. The momentum couldn't be any higher as we gear up for this release, and - we hope - the imminent announcement of Morgan's new studio album.
