As the excitement builds ahead of Luke Grimes’ return as Kayce Dutton in Marshals Season 2, which premieres on Sunday, October 4th, Grimes has opened up about what it was that initially drew him to Kayce's character in the original Yellowstone series.
During his high-profile appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show this year, Grimes reflected on his experience of filming Marshals, Yellowstone and of working with the show's creator, Taylor Sheridan, over the course of the best part of a decade.
When Barrymore asks how, via Kayce, he was able to portray a character who was known for his toughness and ruthlessness, but also his emotional vulnerability and sensitivity, Grimes responds, “I mean, that's what was so attractive about that part”.
Grimes goes on to pay tribute for the intricacy and layers Sheridan gave Kayce in the Yellowstone script, “I'd just never read anything like that before, you know. And it was all in the writing. It's like that nuance and that humanity was on the page. Because, you know, Taylor is such a great writer and...You don't normally see the guy in the Western who can take care of business, but also show his feelings and wear his hear on his sleeve. I'd never seen that in a Western before”.
Grimes explains how, in traditional Westerns, you usually only see either the merciless, tough-guy persona who can't open up to anyone, or on the other end of the spectrum, the sensitive character who can't stand up to the fierce, gun-slinging cowboys.
He shares how refreshing it was to see a character who could be both, “It's normally one or the other, and it was sort of beautiful to play, you know, both of those things. This guy is completely capable, he's an ex-Navy SEAL, but he also loves his wife and his kid, and would do anything for them, and is...a sweetheart to his family”.
With Grimes able to delve a little deeper into Kayce's personality on Marshals, particularly with the loss he experiences between Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2 and Marshals Season 1.
With the first season of Marshals featuring a blockbuster cameo from one of Grimes’ good buddies, Riley Green, as Garrett, we're excited to see if there are any other musical guests lined up for the sophomore season. Grimes, of course, has established himself as a respected country artist in recent years, and has - as his link-up with Green highlights - made a few friends in the Nashville scene.
Yellowstone built a strong reputation as country music tastemakers, partly due to their brilliant country and Americana soundtrack, curated by Music Supervisor Andrea von Foerster, and partly thanks to the huge on-screen guests, such as Lainey Wilson, Zach Bryan, Ryan Bingham, Turnpike Troubadours and more.
As a result, we have an inkling Sheridan and his crew might have a few more famous faces up their sleeves for Marshals Season 2, with some rumours even circulating that we may see the return of Lainey as Abby and Ian Bohen as Ryan, either in Marshals or in Sheridan's other hugely popular Yellowstone spin-off, Dutton Ranch.
