Luke Grimes’ ‘Marshals’ Season 2 Trailer Brings Kayce Dutton Back to His Yellowstone Roots

Marshals is returning for a second season, and if the new trailer is anything to go by, Kayce Dutton - who, in Season 1 was trying to escape Yellowstone - appears not to have outrun it.

Some fans online expressed surprise when Marshals was renewed. Not because people weren’t watching, but because the reaction to the first season felt pretty mixed.

Even Luke Grimes admitted he had doubts about whether Kayce Dutton needed another chapter. He said at the time, “I thought Yellowstone was over,” later confessing the idea of a “Kayce Dutton procedural” initially “sounded really terrible”.

But it turns out, people really were watching it. The Yellowstone spin-off premiered in March with 9.52 million same-day viewers on CBS, making it the biggest new series premiere of 2025/26.

Within seven days, that first episode had reached 20.6 million viewers across CBS and streaming, while also becoming the most streamed CBS episode ever on Paramount+. So from CBS’ point of view, bringing it back was probably never really in doubt.

What is more interesting is how different the reaction was compared to the numbers. Season 1 currently sits at 48% with critics and just 28% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, while Dutton Ranch sits at 89% with critics and 85% with audiences.

Yellowstone had spent years showing Kayce trying to escape the Dutton ranch, the violence surrounding his family and everything the Dutton name had cost him. By the finale, he had finally built something that looked a little like peace. Then Marshals put him straight back into the Dutton fire. Season 2 looks like it is leaning much harder into that storyline.

The new trailer brings the Dutton legacy much more firmly back into the story with Tate, Thomas Rainwater and even John Dutton all featuring heavily. There is more action too, with horses, gun-fights and what looks like one particularly big sequence involving Kayce and a moving train. And the trailer feels noticeably more like Yellowstone.

Marshals Season 2 premieres on October 4th on CBS.
