“I Think It Would Be Cool”: Luke Grimes on Whether Kevin Costner Could Feature in ‘Marshals’

As the keenly anticipated second season of Marshals gets underway, the show's star - Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton - has addressed the possibility of Kevin Costner making a return to the Yellowstone universe with a cameo in the series.

Costner, of course, was the Dutton patriarch in the original Yellowstone series, with Kayce serving as the reluctant heir to John Dutton's throne. They had a complex relationship throughout the series, before John's death at the start of the final season.

As Grimes acknowledges in his interview with USA Today, given how Marshals follows on chronologically from Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2, if Costner was to make an appearance as John Dutton, the only feasible way would be as part of a flashback.

He begins by admitting he and Costner have lost touch since Yellowstone, but underlines there's no bad blood, “I've never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together, not for any other reason than just, you know, we're both busy guys and life moves on”.

Grimes expands by underlining that he would be up for a reunion on Marshals, but suggests that there's another cameo he'd prefer to see in a flashback, “I mean, I think it would be cool. I doubt that will happen at this point, I just don't know, you know. I think if there was a flashback, I'd probably rather it be with Monica [Long-Dutton], than John. I think that would be more poignant to the character, but we'll see”.

Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille, was Kayce's wife in Yellowstone, with Asbille not returning for Marshals. Without giving away any major spoilers, similary to John Dutton, Monica's involvement in Marshals would seemingly have to come as part of a flashback.

Grimes caveats his comments by stressing that there's nothing in the works at the moment, “There's been no conversation, but I sure would love it. I love working with her”.

While we think the chances of either a John or Monica cameo in Marshals are low, the former feels especially unlikely, given the very public war of words between Costner and the Yellowstone producers, such as Taylor Sheridan, ahead of the final season.

We suspect a more probable appearance from the original Yellowstone series could come from Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). With the duo heading up their own Yellowstone spin-off, Dutton Ranch, which runs contemporaneously to Marshals, a crossover episode could make for a heartwarming reunion. Both Grimes and Kelly have previously expressed an interest in this idea.

The first episode of Marshals Season 2 aired on Sunday, October 4th, with new instalments arriving each week. The curtain opens on Kayce as he attempts to recover his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), in a dramatic premiere to kick off the sophomore season.
