In an evening that was overflowing with stellar performances and heartfelt tributes, Lainey Wilson's evocative rendition of Deana Carter's ‘Strawberry Wine’ was undoubtedly one of the highlights.
Lainey took the stage as part of a touching tribute to Matraca Berg, who was being honoured with the BMI Icon Award. Berg had a hand in writing ‘Strawberry Wine’, which has since established itself as one of the most popular country songs of all time.
Endearingly, Lainey Wilson laced the innocent delight and jubilance that pervades ‘Strawberry Wine’ into each lyric, with the 2023 CMA Entertainer of the Year nominee sending a surge of electricity fizzling throughout the packed-out industry audience.
Lainey Wilson's most recent No. 1 hit, ‘Watermelon Moonshine’, contains a plethora of homages to Deana Carter's ode to young love, so it felt fitting that Lainey was the one to deliver this cover.
Elsewhere in the evening, Ashley McBryde covered ‘Wrong Side Of Memphis’ and Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter teamed up for a powerful rendition of their Grammy-nominated duet, ‘You and Tequila’, with Matraca Berg having co-written both tracks.
Additionally, Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs took the stage together to cover ‘Going, Going, Gone’ and ‘Thought You Should Know’ respectively, with the two country megastars sharing the coveted 2023 BMI Songwriter of the Year Award.
