Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter took the stage at the 2023 BMI Country Awards in Nashville to perform ‘You and Tequila’ as part of a special tribute to Matraca Berg.
Matraca Berg co-wrote the Grammy-nominated duet with Deana Carter, with Carter releasing her own version in 2003. Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter's rendition appeared on the ‘Summertime’ hitmaker's acclaimed 2010 album, Hemingway's Whiskey.
Kenny and Grace's beautifully heartfelt, intricate performance served as an homage to the masterful songwriting and lyricism of Matraca Berg, who received the 2023 BMI Icon Award.
In September, Kenny Chesney surprised fans at Grace Potter's show with a surprise rendition of ‘You and Tequila’, with the ballad remaining a keystone of Grace's setlist.
The BMI duet came hours after Kenny Chesney unveiled his blockbuster 2024 Sun Goes Down tour, which will feature support from Zac Brown Band, Megan Moroney and Uncle Kracker.
Elsewhere during the star-studded evening, attendees were serenaded by Lainey Wilson's stellar rendition of Deana Carter's ‘Strawberry Wine’ and Ashley McBryde's fiery take on Trisha Yearwood's ‘Wrong Side Of Memphis’, both of which were written by Berg.
Additionally, Morgan Wallen took the stage to honour his fellow BMI Songwriter of the Year honouree, Luke Combs, with a moving cover of ‘Going, Going, Gone’. Luke returned the favour by performing Morgan's chart-topping ode to his mother, ‘Thought You Should Know’.
