Jelly Roll has unveiled the expanded 22-song tracklist for his new album, Beautifully Broken, with the blockbuster project set to feature an array of star-studded guest appearances.
Excitingly, Beautifully Broken will see Jelly Roll reuniting with his close friend, MGK, on ‘Time of Day’. It follows the two genre-blending artists’ hugely popular collaboration, ‘Lonely Road’, which dropped in July and saw the duo inventively interpolating John Denver's legendary 1971 country anthem, ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’.
Fans will undoubtedly be looking forward to hearing Jelly and MGK teaming up once again, given the duo's chemistry and their penchants for blurring the lines between different genres.
In addition to ‘Time of Day’, Jelly Roll has hit the studio with Ilsey for ‘When the Drugs Don't Work’ and Wiz Khalifa for ‘Higher Than Heaven’. Given Wiz Khalifa's widely known love of marijuana, we imagine the latter will be a playful, light-hearted ode to getting high.
As part of a Spotify conversation with MGK ahead of the project release, Jelly Roll revealed that he initially promised he'd sing the ‘Time of Day’ hook, before deciding to let his buddy deliver the entire hook by himself to intensify the emotionality of it.
Jelly Roll explained why, “I was like, ‘No, man, I'm telling you, man, it was so your story. It felt so personal to who you are and your situation and you as a human, the growth and the changes you've made, and I heard it, I was like, ‘This is it, dude’”.
MGK joked, “My favourite part, I listen to the album being like, ‘I finally get to hear Jelly sing this part on ‘Time of Day’’. Like he's been telling me he was gonna re-record it and take me off of it, but I listen to it - you're still not on it, you asshole! It's still just me the whole fucking time. It's so annoying. I hate you...I love you”.
Jelly Roll teasingly concluded, “I was arguing with you so late that night, I was just like, ‘I got it, don't worry, I promise’. I felt like I just gotta burp him and put him to bed”.
Alongside these momentous duets, Jelly Roll's new project will feature a plethora of never-heard-before tracks, such as ‘What's Wrong With Me’, ‘Heart Of Stone’, ‘Hey Mama’, ‘Everyone Bleeds’, ‘Born Again’, ‘Guilty’, ‘Little Light’, ‘Smile So Much’ and more.
Beautifully Broken will also include ‘Winning Streak’, which the ‘Need a Favor’ hitmaker performed on SNL last week, as well as previously released singles, ‘I Am Not Okay’, ‘Liar’ and ‘Get By’. The latter serves as the 2024 ESPN College Football theme-song.
